nice Ed Sullivan take there...only us old fossils would know that lolNeedless to say, but I'm saying it "for all you youngsters out there" anyways, the Rolling Stones did the original...
Sadly the days of being able to create new music from sampling from old music is not really viable anymore post the Blurred Lines fiasco. You can get away with it if you are an obscure and unknown but even now with Spotify buying whosampled.com there's a legitimate question as to whether the copyright holders will start going after artists who are more obscure and do a better job of hiding their samples.Re: Michael MacDonald — this all makes sense, then. He does have that sheen of easy-listening-dad-rock… and I mean that in the best way. I’m digging it
The world of analog sampling is amazing. All of this was done with tapes and manual timestamp tracking. It irritates me to no end when I hear people say that this did not take musical talent. It takes enormous talent and skill.
My favourite example is Beastie Boys’ Paul Revere. They took the drum loop from T La Rock’s It’s Yours, reversed it and slowed it down (I think) to create something entirely new. All analog. The patience required to do this, and the innate sense of timing, rhythm and the ability to see music abstractly enough to understand how to re-engineer it in this way… mind blowing.
Great examples, btw. I’m loving these videos.
Otis Redding is so good… but I gotta admit that I do enjoy some Black Crowes from time to time
the original...who wouda thunk...white boys covering black guys ..lol
This is great. Blondie is fun and all, but I’ve always seen their version as grocery store background music.
But...............

Ok. I’m gonna need some time to digest this…Sugar Hill Gang - Rappers Delight
Sample: Chic - Good Times
2Pac - Do For Love
Sample: Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do For Love
All of these are solid. Great examples of great coversTwo covers of the Archie Bell & The Drells classic "Tighten Up"
I have 15 covers of the original on my hard drive and iTunes playlist, but these are the 2 most different
