I listen to Classic Rock every morning and i really enjoy the trivia Q&A at 6:30. John Derringer is hilarious, and Ryan is so good with his memory. The odd times when John takes a day off, Ryan run the Q&A himself in different way, it is not so enjoyable as... I only want to note that my level of respect for Ryan went up many notches this mornig when he sincerely admitted himself did not know how/why a leap year happens...

How many of us find it possible to do such things? Even in Terb posting? I'd say Kudos to Ryan.

Admitting you're wrong is tough to do. I would have to say that you need to be comfortable with yourself and your own intelligence in order to admit not knowing something.

Ryan is not the brightest bulb in the box, but he does come across as a very decent guy.

Derringer is quite the intellect, well read, and with a startlingly good memory and the ability to come up with these life analogies (best way I can describe it) that make you stop and think and agree. He does seem to have mellowed a bit in the last few years. In the past he could be a bit much to handle with his right wing rants and his "tool of the day", but he seems to have put that shit aside. (The best was when he had the Hells Angels on Q107 bullshiting about how they are just a bunch of guys who like to ride motorcycles.)

Have you noticed a few times last year, they were chiming back and forth that John mentioned something that made me think of Terb. Could be a member, for LOL.

I enjoy listening to the Q every morning as well. I liked the Headlines game they played, now just called 'A Game' because they seem to be making it up as they go.

And just off the top of my head I think I know why Leap Year happens every four years.
The earth take just over 24 hours to circle the sun and every four years it results in one extra day.

If I am wrong hopefully some will let us know.

Close, but no cigar.

The period of the earth about the sun is 365.25 days.

Obviously, there cannot be 365.25 days a year.

So they call it 365 days and every fourth year, we add 1 day to make up for the 4 quarters.

A few years ago, they added a few seconds to the clock to account for that as well too.

Derringer had a very colourful past that sometimes he talks about. He used to be quite the substance abuser - coke, drugs, pot, booze, cigarettes - all of which he has admitted to on the air. He has even admitted to being high many times on the air (along with John Gallagher wherever the hell he is now).

Anyway, according to JD, he has put his druggie days behind him. He's married with 3 kids living out in the burbs somewhere round Stouffville or some god foresaken place like that.

I catched him a few times tally the points incorrectly on Stump the Chump. In light of what you said, i can't help but chuckle... high? at 6:30 AM? Heaven forbits, hahaha. He always says he has the best job in the world, sitting down in T and short, talking his heart out all morning. Good for JD, i enjoy his talk a lot, now i will enjoy it much more, thanks to you guys who has shed more light on him.

BTW, Kudos to Ironhead too.

JD hasn't been doing drugs in a long long time. I think he quit sometime after he returned to TO from Montreal and was working on the FAN with Pat Marsden. (Maybe I'm wrong, who knows, but that's what he has said on the radio.)

Those giggles seem so forced and unnatural, I can't stand it.

CBC Radio 2 is my morning commute option...

I knew it was something like that.
Thanks for the correction Kirk.

Sorry James, i did not misunderstand you. I like him even better now, knowing he is a "normal guy" just like me, going through life with all the ups and downs, only that he maintains a good heart after all. Funny when one listens to the live (any media) show you could feel the person at their truest self for there is no grace period like one has at the keyboard. I'm sure he is free of "most" vice now, the way he sounds to me.

Those giggles seem so forced and unnatural, I can't stand it.

...
I only agree with you on the lady's laught (what's her name? Maurin?), almost like a sound track....but there are quite a few on air this days.

Ryan, Ryan...you just have to get me through love-hate?

This morning, just like the rest of this week, he denied a nice lady her prize for ...one letter, for Terb's sake!!!!! She ran the table, almost. For stumbling on the old acronym for TSX (she MUMBED TSC instead of TSE, but it sounded "close") which JD would "help" her in a heartbeat and let her have the prize. This dude from Milton have the heart to "fail" her.... I wish i could put him in The Killing Field with Pol Pot beside him and STUMP him: Where Are We? Bet you he could NOT tell.

Whatever happened to Lobster Boy with the crazy laugh? Did he get a better job, or was there a falling out with Q and JD?

Definitely there was a falling out with JD.

Lobsterboy got tired of being Beta Male to JD's Alpha male all the time I think. I remember towards the end they were struggling to even be civil to one another. (I remember a couple of screaming matches - and they weren't fake. One was about I think the astronaughts who died on Columbia and JD said they were heros and Craigie (Lobsterboy) disagreed and they got into it. Another was when JD had just gotten married and was lecturing Craigie about marriage and how if his (JD's) wife ever fucked around on him the marriage would be over. Craigie (rightfully) said something like "so you've been married for 6 months and you're an expert" (Craigie having been married for 10 or more years.

Anyway, Craigie was definitely outgrowing the golly shucks side kick role and JD had / has a massive ego and he would go out of his way to make sure Craigie KNEW he was second fiddle.

When they brough Ryan on board - who was just an intern, Craigie could see the writing on the wall. Ryan was only too happy to suck JD's cock and that's exactly the kind of second mic that JD wanted. Finally, Craigie jumped the shark when JD orchestrated this boxing match between Ryan and Craigie. Craigie wanted nothing to do with it, but JD forced the issue and goaded Craigie into it. Finally, they had the boxing match and Craigie lost. I knew right then it was over. Shortly thereafter Craigie just disappeared.

I believe Craigie is in Windsor now in a smaller market, but running his own morning show.

Since JD has been in the morning show on Q, he's gone through quite a few Beta Males.

First there was Craigie

Then Ross Mcleod (if I remember correctly - who was every bit as smart as JD (so you knew that wasn't going to last)

Then there was Bill Hayes - JD's brother - who moved on, as opposed to being pushed (though I could be wrong)

And now there is Ryan. Ryan seems to be content to be the goofy side kick for now, and frankly he's good in the role. But sooner or later, I gotta believe he's going to grow tired of it.

Q plays the same 10 old classic rock songs over and over and over and over.....that is truly pathetic. I jump between the Fan (funny) and cbc 1 (informative). For tunes, I'll go mp3 player or Jazz fm.

James,

Thanks for the update on Craigie...funny, since they were part of my morning ride for years, it's interesting how you might wish a radio jockey well if you liked him...and I always liked Craigie.

I also like Andy Frost who was morning fill in for JD...and one day would not let Maureen Hollowy's inane gossip dumb down his show.
