He is still getting all that energy export loot in EUR and USD
Energy sanctions are the way to hurt Putin
I don't see much effect of the Ruble's fall for Russians, if the Russian banking system is cut off from the world.

Foreigners owning Russian securities are screwed.

All investors need to weigh the risks of their investments

"Russian securities" is an oxymoron
Nothing is secure in that country

Putin has aided in instantly erasing much of the lifetime savings of many Russians, imposed on them massive inflation and economic devastation, looming depression and international pariah status for years to come. Vodka consumption will triple. And to the Ukraine, Putin has inflicted a lasting living hell, through theft, thuggery and subjugation. And for what gain ?
Who is underwriting Putin and his oligarch mafia, China financially and Trump verbally ? Who are the other actors ? Russia may also be increasingly drawn into dealings with the blackmarket, with players like Iran and N. Korea which help further threaten the US status as the World‘s Reserve Currency.
A threat potentially worse than the pandemic has been unleashed.
Taiwan is next on the menu.

The Russian economy like Alberta is a one trick pony. Putin is dangerous a desperate. Germany would never support energy sanctions anyway which would be a big problem for the US.

Quantitatively, the ruble is down 40%.

The other good news for Putin is that the Russian Central Bank raised their interest rate from 9.5% (already very high) to 20%.

His subjects will not be impressed. If we think that the protests are large now, just wait for these to have personal impacts on families.

Oh…. That’s not good.

Ever back a raccoon into a corner…. They tend to get a little irritated and irrational.

The posturing from Putin today is going to be interesting.

Lots of images of massive lineups for bank machines in Russia on twitter.

Saw this as well, cutting of oil and gas income would be massive to Russia.

Russia is a failed economy and a failed state in which everything and all money flows to Putin and his oligarchs. When the iron curtain fell Russia had the opportunity, and for a moment it looked like it had seized it, to become a modern economy and state. Instead the mob moved in.

And every single one of them is trying to get dollars or euros out. Right now the ruble is not worth the paper it's printed on and it will only get worse because the central bank cannot prop it. W

"In that TV address, Putin wasn't acting like the master of the Kremlin, but the master of the planet; in the same way the owner of a flash car shows off by twirling his keyring round his finger, Putin was twirling the nuclear button. He's said many times: if there is no Russia, why do we need the planet? No one paid any attention. But this is a threat that if Russia isn't treated as he wants, then everything will be destroyed."

Funny you say that. In the past Putin used to like to relate a story about seeing a rat cornered as a young man. His moral of the story was when you back someone in the corner you leave them with nothing to lose.
