Its not a matter of "news" all news is suspect and all facts are being spun. That is the reality. All you can go on is the basis of what you know is true past and present, what makes strategic sense, and what outcomes have been aimed for vs what happened. Sure Russia hoped Ukraine would fold, didn't happen. No option to back down, but there was never any expectation that Kiev could be taken by force with 40 K troops, only if Ukraine folded was it possible to occupy Kiev with 40 K troops. So we are on plan B. Us promised that sanctions would crash the ruble and the Russian economy would implode. Ruble is now stronger then prewar rate. Then then you look at maps. Were the rebellions in Ukraine, Belarus and Kazahkstan a concidence based on where they are on the map? Who stands to gain and who loses. How does this mesh with current big power politics globally? Do you actually think Germany can get off Russian gas in one year? How? How is all this NATO aid gonna be delivered to where it is needed and all the troops trained and ready to deploy with these sophisticated weapons? How are they gonna obtain, distribute and protect fuel? Sure I think Ukraine can have some tactical wins, and they have some pretty good troops, bit when they can only occasionally strike at the masses of Russian firepower, and Russian can hit any spot in their country at any time with cruise missiles, any prospects of defeating Russia become really infinitismal.
Also ask yourself what is missing from the news that you know is true. Do you hear any mention of the relaignment of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church? Do you hear any mention of the changes in language rights and laws in Ukraine? How would Quebeckers react if French was suddenly declared as no longer an official language? Most if them speak english right? Frankly its no big deal to me personally, but we live in a country where language is a big issue, and we know all over the world religeon can be explosive. All these on their own have caused wars, so add it all up and why is anyone surprised?

Even when Admiral Kirby, the DOD press secretary, was discribing the movement of Russian Troops east as a "redeployment" (which is common in wars). Everyone is bleating away on the "retreat" narrative. Wars are a series of redeployments, battles are fluid. This has now become a war of attrition and Ukraine cannot win such a war. It has no means to change the nature of the war to one of manuver as it has no fuel, not enough vehicles and not enough quality and quantity of weapons. Also, its pretty clear to me that not a single NATO country is talking about peace or trying to stop the war, which is utterly morally bankrupt and appalling IMHO. Ukraine is getting shredded, the entire state and people are getting shredded and the West is cheering it on. They have no chance, zero. The alternative is WWIII. If you look at the winners and losers without emotion its clear what the game is. The US has been after nordstream 2 for 3 years now, they just decided to up the ante considerably.

Russia has taken some land and lost other land while unable to refresh troops and equipment while there are multiple reports showing NATO and others sending in much more modern weapons to Ukraine.

A lot of these trucks use standard tires and only have one customer. They have warehouses full of this stuff. Its possible they are old, sitting in warehouse or that no one bothered to change the moulds as the tires have not changed.

It may be imperial overreach, we won't know that until we see how it turns out. We DO know Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria were imperial overreach by the USA.

Putin has modernised the army after Cechnya showes so many weakenesses. Georgia was an easy win but still showed issues. Syria was a longer war that allowed Russia to improve a great deal. The Russian army is powerful. If it was not, NATO would not be pouring billions in arms to try and stop it. I am sure there are areas of the war where Russian platoons find themselves in utter clusterfuck situation. One report is really meaningless. How can you tell if he was Russian or one of the repubic groups. The republic troops are not the best from what I have heard. But there are always disasters in war, and ambushes etc.

Notty, the Russians have genocided villages, including torturing inhabitants. They have torn down Ukrainian statues and replaced them with Russian ones. They have looted farm crops and agricultural machinery. They have bombarded Ukrainian cities into rubble. They have attempted to force Ukrainians to vote in referendums introducing Russian rule. The only thing they haven't done is dropped nukes on Kyiv - probably because their nukes no longer work and they'd probably blow up Moscow by mistake.

It's been 60+ days of war and they've retreated from around Kyiv and Kharkiv and they're making no progress in the East. This is not a "brilliant feint", notty. They are genuinely a terrible army with awful, badly maintained equipment. They are simply not capable of winning at any level.
