There's room for both: Gordon Downie's lyrics are Canadian folklore, Neil Peart was (maybe still is) a follower of Ayn Rand, he tried to be philosophical. Rand is among the best unintentional comedy I've ever read, she's a social Charles Darwin.

The thing about Peart is this... yes he is without a doubt one of the greatest rock drummers of all time... (in the top 5 with Bonham, Palmer, Moon & whomever else you wanna put up there) but when you add into it his equally impressive other percussionist skills, he rises above the rest.
