"Royal" Canadian Forces

I was waiting for this topic to pop up but I never found it.

I don't remember this being an election issue and quite frankly I think it is another waste of my money. Anyone who suggests this is a minimal expense is terribly naive. Identification, signs, badges, ID's, uniform shoulder patches, it's a huge waste and for what? I'm a proud Canadian of English heritage and I see this as a reminiscent old fart idea based on a time when Canada was hanging onto the British apron strings like a child unsure of her steps.

I learned when I was traveling to England for business that the Queen on your money buys you zero recognition after England turned her eyes towards Europe set out the welcome mat for EU while relegating us to the same line and rules as the US, etc.

Also when Prince Charles becomes King, the connotation that the Canadian navy by the 'Royal' designation is representative of serving for that little arrogant prick makes me want to puke.

The only thing I can figure is that it is a slap at Quebec for ignoring them during the last election and while I may not be a great fan (heavy sarcasm here) of the cultural war against the English in Quebec- this is a nice gift to the separatists trying to make proud French Canadians feel more isolated in their own country.

I really had hoped Harper had more intelligence than this.

What "Identification, signs, badges, ID's, uniform shoulder patches" have to change? Nothing on the uniform, ID, etc says "Air Command" or "Maritime Command."

I think it's a well-overdue correction to a historical mistake.

Maybe the patch has changed - my dad's was Royal Canadian Air Force - but that was many years ago. Nothing changes, ID badges, .. nothing ? They had the same arguments from old farts when Canada tried to adopt it's own official flag without the union jack.

If Harper is so nostalgic about the past - why not roll taxes back to the same level as 40 years ago ? Shit I'd love to see the gas tax back to the level before him and his liberal Ontario premier tax partner shoved the HST down our throats.

Oh, sorry. This thread is about Harper, not the military. My mistake.

My mistake - it is Prime Minister Jack Layton initiating this folly is it ?

Shit - anything that Harper does is above reproach ? I don't have any political alliances but for die hard Harper supporters - I guess that just isn't good enough.

It's a stupid dumb waste - why bother ?

The Canadian war veterans seem to be strongly in favour of this so it is a small price to pay.
The same along those who are currently serving.

Contrary to what NoFatties wrote, the costs really are minimal: stationary (which amazingly enough does get used up and needs to be replaced), signs repainted. possibly some I.D.s. It indeed is a small price to pay.

Serving with distinction

The "Royal" title is conferred on units who had served with distinction. (i.e. North West Mounted Police earned the Royal title in 1904 for bringing order to the territories). Over the last 100 years, the Canadian Army, Navy and Air Force have done so during past wars, and in current times.

In the military community, Canadians are recognized as world class servicemen.

There is no nor will there be a ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY as the Army is made up of various Regiments,Corps and Squadrons. A number of Units do have the word "ROYAL" affixed to their name and do so after Royal Assent. ROYAL HAMILTON LIGHT INFANTRY-ROYAL 22nd REGIMENT-ROYAL REGIMENT OF CANADA-ROYAL CANADIAN REGIMENT to name but a few. I wonder if some of the Units ie: EME aka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers will revert to RCEME etc.

My dad left the RCAF after the Hellyer debacle in 1968.There was NO WAY he was going to wear the"Greens" as a member of the Tri Service Canadian Forces.

Good move, long overdue, hopefully something will happen soon to address the CAR situation, and hopefully NoFatties is right about this becoming a major expense, as all serving members of the "Royal" forces will likely get MASSIVE payrate increases (hey, you can't have anyone designated "Royal" looking like a pauper), and to avoid trouble, the plain ol' Army dudes will also share in the windfall. Its grey poupon all the way now, baby!!

Of course 'minimal' is an entirely subjective term; there's no point in even discussing it without numbers. It's also interesting that the Royal Canadian Navy didn't think it appropriate to finally lose the Last Union Jack on it's flag.

What "union flag" or are you talking pre-1968?

IMHO, if the vets of this country wanted it.
THEN THEY F*CKING GET IT!!!!!!!!!
Risked their lives so we can continue to live like the as*holes we are?
Anyone who opposes this can leave Canada right now and go live in China or Iran where freedoms are for sh*t. Good riddance.
Vets can have anything they want.

Your dad was a prime example for the argument behind unification to an integrated armed fighting force. A financially limited country supporting three independent forces with their own appropriations and naturally fostering a service independence that reflected their command structure. I favour the Department of US Navy model which integrates marines, navy and aircraft into an integrated command structure that can support operations anywhere.

However it is the Royal designation that I am arguing is a nostalgic waste of resources that detracts from Canada's independence as a country. For those that have no concept of the term Royal - it signifies that soon our Navy will be in service to King Prince Charles.
