Imho The Clash's best song.
Not really a Clash song:
This may have been issued as a single on in Germany, and possibly some other random countries, but not in the UK or in North America.
That's Eddie, ("Electric Avenue") Grant, miming the lead guitar parts; far right onstage.
Beat-Club was a monthly German music show which initially tried hard to imitate
Top of the Pops. It aired from 1965 - 1972. It continued from 1972 - 1984 as
Musikladen.
I've seen most of the episodes of
Beat-Club, (a few from 1966 no longer exist).
In the mid 60's, German teens were big fans of UK rock/pop, and there were really no good German rock bands. It's a short trip by sea from England to the port city of Bremen
where
Beat-Club was taped, closer than Hamburg, (lower right).
Early episodes were formulaic for 1960's TV music shows: performers miming to top chart hits. Later in the series, there were many live performances by bands who were producing great music which didn't have Top 40 appeal, or an episode of Bubblegum Pop with the likes of 1910 Fruitgum Company and Ohio Express. There were also some gawdawful English pop singers who managed to carve out a half decent living and some chart success simply by being an expatriate English pop singer.
I'm going to look through YouTube and the Internet archive for some clips from the show which I would want to see more than once.
