J J Cale dead at 74: Tributes paid to singer songwriter after his death from a heart attack

http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/going-out/music/j-j-cale-dead-74-2095658

JJ Cale, the man who wrote Eric Clapton classics Cocaine and After Midnight, has died aged 74.

Clapton and Cale collaborated on the 2006 album The Road to Escondido, which won the Best Contemporary Blues Album category in 2008.

He also sang on Angel on Clapton's Old Sock album - Cale's last released music.

His career saw him release 14 albums and his songs have been covered by acts including Johnny Cash and Santana.

A statement on his website said: "We've lost a great artist and a great person.

"JJ Cale passed away at 8:00 pm on Friday July 26 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, CA. He had suffered a heart attack.

"There are no immediate plans for services.

"Donations are not needed but he was a great lover of animals so, if you like, you can remember him with donations to your favorite local animal shelter."

Mirror columnist Tony Parsons was among those to pay tribute on Twitter.

Sharing Cale's music he tweeted: "RIP JJ Cale - got to love a man whose life motto was, 'Slower, baby.'

"RIP The most laid back man in the universe, stone cold genius - 'what have done - cajun moon?'"

Sharing a video of My Gal, he added: "JJ Cale and 4 minutes 24 seconds of the music that never dies 'My Gal don't like those red, red roses.'"

This is sad news. When an artist dies, they take all their potential for more creativity with them, leaving behind what they've rendered. In this way, we should be Thankful for the body of work left for us by Mr. Cale. Sincerely, Jon .

JJ Cale was a genius. He had the gift of expressing complex ideas and feelings through simple songs and melodies. This news makes me sad.

JJ Cale was not in the Velvet Underground. You must be thinking of John Cale.
John Cale - "Heroin". J. J. Cale - "Cocaine". It's not easy. And "Heroin" is not over-rated. Please.

Lynyrd Shynyrd doing a great cover of a JJ song.

Nice guitar solo at the 1:20 mark.

BTW, thanks for the laugh I. Von.

Oh man, what a loss. Thanks for posting this thread; it's the first I heard of his passing. My dad brought me to a number of JJ Cale concerts over the years. If I had an extra minute, I'd post a My Gal link... And then I'd have trouble letting my next appointment escape relentless JJ Cale on my iPod. RIP to a great musician, animal lover, and someone who brought my dad and I closer.
