If you listen to the Tod Rundgren interview on Mark Maron's WTF podcast, he talks about the Band. I didn't realize he produced Stage Fright. Anyway, he portrays them as somewhat drug addled sidemen to Robbie Robertson. Never really struck me as a fun group to be in.
I think that they were very close knit and loyal to each other. They all made significant contributions to the sound. Once they move to California (after their 2nd album, I believe) is when things started to unravel. Todd did not spend time with them during that phase.

Watch the Last Waltz and pay attention to how they look at each other and interact. You can tell that they were as close as brothers. Their documentary was Once Were Brothers

True I suppose. But such closeness can be a trap.

Yeah. And Todd's remarks about Springsteen were interesting. Back to the 50s, with motorcycles and switchblades.
That was my view of Springsteen.

Who's to say how and why the dynamics of friendships evolve? I laugh when young girls talk about BFFs. They have no concept of life and relationships.

I'd posit that the members of The Band were closer than the Beatles ever were. They were basically living together for years on end between travelling with Ronnie Hawkins, then on their own and then sharing a house for a year or 2 (Big Pink). My understanding that it wasn't until moving to L.A. and the drug scene that things went downhill. They had great times together and always talked about them fondly, until the later years.

The Beatles lasted for about 8 years and the Band for about 7.

The Beatles got tired of being brothers and broke free of what they felt was a situation they need to grow up and out of. George expressed the most resentment. When somebody interviewing him mentioned that John thought of George as a little brother who looked up to him, George pointed out that was what John thought. George had other ideas.

Yes. Saturday night at the old malt shop sharing a milkshake with Betty Lou. He was also pretty funny about the execrable Meat Loaf. When Mark said he was big, Todd replied "well he was a big something".

Bat Out of Hell was a fantastic album. After that, nothing special.

Anyways drifting off topic of Garth, The Band and the impact that these Canadian boys had on music and how close they had to be to accomplish that.
