maybe this will add a bit, here are a couple of debates I find very interesting on the topic.

First the only one I've ever found that gave me pause because in my opinion the religious person won the debate, Sam Harris and Rabbi David Wolpe part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jkBCEN1Igg

Second Christopher Hitchens (my favourite of the new atheists personally) and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnMYL8sF7bQ

and you know this how? you are able to get inside the heads of Dawkins and Hitchens? I think trying to argue religion and a concept of a Creator with them is about as pointless as trying to disprove that with a Pat Robertson or a member of the Taliban.
Hmm...not so sure of that. I found that Dawkins, in particular, is a very good listener and would I suspect consider any reasonable evidence for a God/Creator. But he does know all the standard bs arguments for God...so you would have to find a new approach I suspect.

I think "evidence" is the operative word. There is lots of evidence that the claims of religionists are false, but that still does not prove that some sort of god does not exist. If someone has evidence "for" god they can bring it forward. So far has not happened.

I've been down that road myself. Lots of purported miracles, gifts of the spirit, etc. etc....all bs once you dig a bit. Miracles always happen in other countries...or they are things that cannot be proven (headaches cured, etc. etc...but no missing limbs regenerated). People believe because they want...want desperately...to believe. But when you realize that the belief is hollow, false, based on fantasy and illusion...then it does not work very well to comfort or to help.

I've had this 'is god real' argument full bore and serious about thre times in my life with people i've for years, very well and respect a lot. We generally got to a point of agreeing to disagree.

Every single time the last stance has fallen back to,' well prove there isn't a god' and since it's almost impossible to prove a negative, they then conclude that god must exist.

It's a non-starter. You believe what you need to and don't dump on me or call me incomplete for not doing the same.

I'll believe in me, family, and friends. If necessary, the Great Pumpkin.

Tell me something, does a 49 year old woman need "saving"? Hasn't she learned enough in her almost half century of life to make her own decisions?

Anyways, since it wasn't the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster that saved her, it's all bullshit anyways... :D
