"Be very certain the heart has stopped" turns out to be the title of a modern dance piece that Mrs C is practicing.
I am not really in the mood for humour. It simply has gone on too long.

you did say we had to be very sure the heart was stopped..remember? ....that means checking to be "very sure"
I am sorry I did not communicate in a way that everyone was able to understand that they should not try and check for a pulse. I was foolish to assume that people would understand.

For the record:
1) a layperson should not try to determine if the heart is beating by trying to find a pulse. It will not tell you for sure if it beating or not.
2) a layperson should not attach an EKG or ECG to see if the heart is beating (other than the one built into a AED)
3) other methods like cutting the patient open to take a peak are also frowned upon.

4) If the patient is breathing (like the one being discussed in this thread was) or is responsive it is safe to assume the heart is still pumping
5) Pushing the First Aid worker away, talking or trying to talk, and other physical activity is pretty much also a sign that the heart is beating.

Oh I wish I could run a survey to see how many other people were confused with the 'be very sure the heart was stopped' nested among the breathing and responsive statements?

Simon, do you really think her comments make any sense except as a personal attack? I was biting my tongue during the last few exchanges.
