It really boils down to whether you want to see a particular SP, or just want to see an SP. Certainly reference checks will inhibit the quantity of potential customers, but they may also weed out some of the less desirable clientele. Different SPs have different rules, and they're probably non negotiable. Pick someone else, if you don't want to abide by her rules. Someone else who is agreeable to her conditions will take your place.
The funniest point is that reference thing, they ask you for your full legit name, occupation and stuff like that, but you what do you know about her? They usually don't even work under their real first name and generally have no last name. They will say both parties take the risks of seeing strangers, but you give them a lot of personal details to someone you know pretty much nothing about them. What they will do with these infos? Write them down in their little black book for sure. They don't need to call your wife or sell your info to peddlers, just being on that list, if raided by the LEOs is enough to put me incomfortable.

its obvious that you can just not deal with the SP and go somewhere else. Its also obvious that some thirsty individuals would give Their SIN/SSI to an sp to see her.
it doesnt change the fact that its an odd practice.
and in my opinion i think you would have to be crazy to give all that information just to see a stranger like that.
and the whole Reference thing doesnt make sense to me.

I do not think the SP wants all your real info(s.i.n or address) just the name of another SP that you have seen so she can inquire about how you were with them.. attitude,hygiene and what not

I have yet to hear about any girl ever asking for anyone's SIN. A reference is a far cry from your SIN.
As far as references, in the US, it's mandatory. In Canada, as I said before, I ask for a reference only if I'm seeing someone new in their home. Why? Because I'm independent. I don't have an agency who knows where I am and what time I'm supposed to be on my way. I want to know that the person isn't a jerk, a creep, violent, etc before I show up on the doorstep. So how do I do that? A reference from another girl or agency (who is well reputed) who vouches for him that he is in fact a gentleman. If someone is any of the aforementioned things, in a hotel I can turn and walk away. At someone's home, where there's no security for me, it can go awry quite quickly and I'd rather not be in that situation.
I don't think it's laughable at all. It's being careful.
I'm not sure what the big deal is. I've been asked for references by other indies quite a few times, and I've always been happy to provide them. If I can help another lady feel safe and comfortable, why shouldn't I?
And usually, you don't have to contact the SP for a reference: you just tell the lady you want to see who you have seen before (that you believe will remember you). The lady you want to see will contact former lady and ask her if she can vouch for you. Assuming you weren't an ass and didn't smell like one, former lady will provide said reference.
I rarely ask for reference, in large part because in situations where I would, prospective clients tend to provide them without being prompted.

I'm not sure how the ladies feel assured they're not being lied to, but I'm not here to be critical of whatever model they feel comfortable with. Personally, I'd suspect it would be nothing better than a false sense of security, but as I say, I haven't been through their confirmation model either.
