They have mellowed a bit. Now they just charge $250 for an oil change.

Except when he tells you to go take a shower?
ROTFLMAO, too bad the young'ins won't understand it.

$250 for an oil change, is this for real? I paid $70 on a jeep and thought that was pretty harsh.

Many informed people without avested interest think that 5W20 and even 5W30 should never be used except during winter in cold climates. They feel sthese oils have too many viscosity improving additives which form varnish-like deposits over time.
So what would you use then ???
Tricky question. A person should really do their homework on the model car they have - join an owner's forum and compare opinions form people who've seen and understood the schematics & taken the engines apart and are in a position to understand if in fact there are spots in the engine where it is trully necessary to use an oil lighter than 10W30 to get a drizzle of lubrication through.

My car is a spec'd for 5w30. I've been running it with 2L of 5W30 and 2L of 10W30 while keeping a bottle of 10W40 for the 1/3 litre top-offs between oil changes. If I decide to keep the car past this summer, I will probably switch to Mobil1 10W30 (which most experts think flows as well as conventional 5W30,) though I might mix in a litre of 5W20 syn during the three coldest months of the year.

The original point was that there is probably no car on the market that actually needs 5W20 as opposed to 5W30, and most would probably be better of with 10W30 synthetic.

My mercedes dealer insists on using 15W40 all year round for my car.

And I don't dare argue with a german in a white lab coat.
Maybe things have changed in just the last couple of years, but from what I've heard, most German cars get only 10W40 or 15W40 in Europe.

Anyone have news about wht they fill now?

BTW, for all you guys with older engines out of warranty, it is pretty hard to beat Shell's Rotella T products. The only motor oil with a cult following!!!

And a well deserved one at that!
Where can you get a selection of Rotella products in Toronto? I only see the odd bottle of 15W40 at some Shell stations, but I've read on BITOG and several Amercian based car forums that there is a whole line of conventional and sythetic Rotella products in verious weights.

I passed by sign on Keele north of Finch with a Shell logo saying "Lubricants Store", does anyone know if they have a different selection of oils than usual suspects?

Many people who race (legally) with their daily drivers only use Rotella Diesel 15W40 - they take their engines apart for examination regularly and feel this oil noticably reduces wear better than anything else under this type of abuse.
