My xbox 360 recently just got the red ring of death.

How much does it cost to repair? :(

already, did you take care of it man??

I want to get the PS3 as well, but I am thinking Boxing day next year probably have better prices. I suspect the price will go down to $349.

Next year? You're willing to wait a full year to save $50? I got mine for $350 a few months ago on sale at loblaws. Loblaws/Superstore also has frequent Tax free weekends which ends up being close to the same discount.

I've used it as more as a Blu-ray player and HTPC replacement (streaming MKV's , avi's etc from PC) than a gaming machine.

Don't expect prices to drop too much until the next generation of systems comes out (or at least significant improvements to hardware/software).

Just the "Superstore" type locations.
I think it will go down.. but not to an MSRP lower than $350 in 2009 if I had to guess. Perhaps it will go on sale for $350 with a bundled game or accessories next boxing week (they seemed to do that for the $400 price point this time around).

I just got 3 Rings-of-Death also. Microsoft has extended their warranty to 3 years when it comes to a 'Ring-of-Death' problem. It used to be 1 year only.

It's usually caused by an over-heating problem, due to a design flaw. In order to keep the console smaller when putting in their disk-drive, they made the heat sink smaller, causing an overheat in a large number of machines.

Even the mighty Xbox360 Elite has the Red Ring of Death.Plus you do pay more for online services for membership. Or points deduction.
PS3 you need to pay for download contents real Cash.
For fighting games the controller is better for PS3.
There's over 400 games for the Xbox 360 annually and only lowly 260 for the PS3.But well over 700 games for the Wii. Most are shitty titles that 's why I sold my Wii.
I'm loveing my PS3.
Can't really get the blue-tooth device to work...playing End War.

PS3 Pros
- Reliability
- Blu-Ray
- Lifespan (3+ years-till-obsolete)
- MGS4!!
- FREE to play online.
- Performance (debatable? - but proprietary 8-core processor is cool)

PS3 Cons
- Very weak market share (online not very busy + user community smaller)
- Price (generally higher + 360 can often be found used for DIRT cheap)
- Relative lack of game titles.
- Vibrating controllers an additional expense (if wanted)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

360 Pros
- Massive market share (3+:1, online ALWAYS busy, huge user group.)
- Generally cheaper.
- Twice or more titles available.
- More unique titles available (MASS EFFECT!! etc.)
- Stock controllers have vibration. (If you care)

360 Cons
- Very risky reliability. (Admittadly rushed into service a year early. Poor internal design. Overheats, 3RROD very common.
- Shamelessly abusive "addition" costs for decent HDD, Wifi adapter, intercooler, cordless kit, mic kit, etc etc...
- Xbox Live subscription fee is insulting. Points-based DLC setup is obviously rigged to force over-purchase of points and wasteful spending on stupid things (gamer icons etc.)
- Will be obsolete in 2 years.
- Xbox Live service auto-renews without asking. No way to cancel auto-renew without abhorrently torturous phone call to india. Will refuse to cease retention of credit card info unless you spend an hour beating it out of them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS3 is probably the overall better machine but everyone seems to buy the Xbox anyway. I think the market share is what overrules every other rational decision-basing effect. Therefore, I would say the choice is probably based on how badly you want to play online. Xbox Live is flawed as hell BUT it is BUSY, PS3's online, while smooth and functional and free, just doesn't have the user volume to be competitive.

For primarily single-player or local-multi use (and if you intend to buy into blu-ray media for movies/tv shows) PS3 wins hands down IMO.

Microsoft repaired my XBox 360 free of charge (see 'red rings of death' post above). However, to my surprise, they sent me a brand new console!! Was i ever surprised !!!!

I wonder if they'll ever come out with a blu ray drive for the XBox 360. There were rumours flying around for the past year that they'd come out with one last September, but it never happened. What is Microsoft waiting for? The only advantage PS3 has over the XBox 360 is the blu ray.......if XBox 360 would introduce it, they'd easily be the favored gaming console.

Looks like this thread got bumped. I like the PS3 because of
The Blue Ray player
Free online play
Far superior construction/reliability

The following games:
Killzone 2
Resistance 2
Little Big Planet
Infamous
Metal Gear Solid 4

Upcoming:
Heavy Rain
Metal Gear Solid 5 - just announced!
God of War 3

The only games that I'm interested in for the XBox are the Gears and Halo series.

What if an xbox unit has been 'software' modded? (not hardware modded)

Will MS still take it unknowingly?
