What steps do you take to prep your car for winter?

Snow tires?

Rustproofing?

Something else?

Tires and oil change. With rust proofing where it's at these days no need to do it annually.

Almost forgot, bigger deeper mat under the drivers position for all the crap you transfer in.

Funny this topic started today as my car was serviced today.

Ice Scraper and Snow Brush
Snow Shovel collapsable
Reflective Safety Triangles/Pylons
Flares/Spotlight/lights
Booster Cables/Booster Pack
Traction Aid (mats)
Extra Windshield Washer Fluid
Emergency Blanket & Winter Clothes, sleeping bag, dry winter socks, hat, gloves, scarf
Emergency food (dried nuts, trail-mix, vitamin c tabs, something with sugar, drink boxes, water)
Candle, can and matches
First Aid Kit
12-Volt Air Compressor
Tire Sealant
ice delocker/wd40
remote starter
gas line antifreeze

my vehicle is 5 years old so I've purchased roadside assistance through caa and cdn tire, sometimes in remote places and you never know.

4 new all weather tires
1 new spare all weather tire
brakes replaced
all fluids checked and topped
lube, oil, filter
heater checked
electrical checked (needed some replacements)

Tires and brakes weren't planned for, but safety first! Sorry girls, I can play with 5 of you this month.

A few years ago I bought a new snow shovel and we had next to no snow. This year I bought a new snowblower and winter tires so By extrapolation I expect to be sitting on my deck in shorts at Xmas. :D

Of me in shorts? Why would you want to do that to yourself? Or did you mean send you pictures of pretty girls while I'm on my deck? (trust me, that would be the more aesthetically pleasing option by far....)

Not yet thinking about winter. Took the Harley out for a 2 hour run today...so sweet to still be able to ride the bike in November. tomorrow will be another epic summer like day.

All very good points so far. Like HOF's list for sure. A nice coat of durable wax or sealant to help protect the paint finish and keep your car looking great throughout winter.

Also a nice coat or rain-X or aquapel on the windshields at least. Rain- X washer fluid is a bit more expensive but does a good job.

If you have an older car or your wife drives, get a CAA membership for added peace of mind.

Tow truck drivers are scum and will rip you off like no tmr without thinking twice.

The more prepared you are to take care of yourself, the better prepared you are to help that damsel in distress which could result in some benefits(not because you were looking for anything in return off course).

Do you do it yourself or get it professionally done?
If it's just paint protection you need and don't care much about swirl marks and spider webs there are lots of great products out there.

My bro doesn't care about swirls so we did a wash, claybarring, polish and sealant on his car by ourselves and all by hand.

Results were pretty good for 2hrs work by 2 people but you could still see the swirls in bright sunlight and when looked at closely.

Collinite 845 gets rave reviews as does Duragloss 105 for ease of use and durability and are popular Last Step Products for winter protection.

Duragloss may be avaliable at carquest but collinite would have to be ordered online.

Despite prices being higher than over the counter offerings at CDN tire, the online products are worth it.

Just google some of the waxes and sealants at websites like eshine, wisdomdetail and autoobsessed and you'll see why.

If you want swirl mark removal especially on dark cars the professional is the way to go if you don't have the time to DIY or don't have the machine necessary to achieve it.

If you like doing this stuff yourself, get a dual action polisher.

There is a great thread on redflagdeals going as well as places like autogeek etc.

I always try to wax the car before it gets too cold, the wax protects against the road salt that sticks to the sides and the snow and ice slides off easier.
