First McKenna, now Tobin. 2 heavyweights declining. Do they know something ? like they can't beat Harper in the next election ? One thing common about these two is their French sucks, so it may be difficult to woo the Quebec vote.

Tobin & McKenna dropping out is a huge blow. What the hell is going on? There could be an election at any time given the composition of this parliament - an election which could still go either way - doesn't anyone want to be PM?

I think McKenna would have been a good choice. I like Tobin much less but at least he'd be a decent campaigner. Of course if I could appoint a PM, it would be Clyde Wells, but I assume this is out of the question.

Some of the prospercts are just plain scarry: Copps - discredited and uninspired, Manley - unelectable geek, Rea - ARE YOU KIDDING? Ignatieff - pompous ass and better suited to the other party and we don't need a PM with a huge foregin agenda.

I'd vote for Brisson or Charest but I don't think it's a good time.

I understand Charest is a Tory federally, only carry the Liberal brand in the Province of Quebec against the Bloc.

I would back Rock as leader, but I guess he's left hanging in the wind for the gun registry debacle.

In a very dark place
New leader

Since the race to fill the leadership void with the liberals ( why did they only notice it now) has slowed somewhat I now suspect that TOV has gone into hiding while he puts TEAM TOV together.

Their problem is that liberals can't stand up to be counted, that whole lacking a spine thing must be tough.

Anyone else think Martin will change his mind and come back (a la Trudeau)??
I hope not. Martin should remain active and hopefully become Finance Minister again, at which he was perhaps the best ever. But this guy just isn't a good front man - even Canadians won't vote for a guy who looks like Less Nessman's father!

The fact that such a blattantly poor campaigner could be chosen as leader probably contributed to the notion that the Liberal party is a place where internal connections and "paying your dues" come before all other considerations.

I'd like Martin to become finanace minister again too. It was really his performance as finance minister in Chretien's gov't that gave him the necessary stature to run for the Liberal leadership in the first place. He is more suited to the finance minister's role where he can second guess himself and hold endless meetings until he gets it right. The PM has to make decisions very quickly. The position requires lots of political savvy. Chretien had that quality. Whether you approved of him or not, Chretien was politically agile, practical and canny. Martin is more your sitting duck type. Nice guy and a straight shooter but not really a leader.
