What is interesting to me, although this poll is completely unscientific, is that at least on this issue it is more an North American as opposed to Continental issue than an "American" issue.

Indeed that was what I was interested in finding out. I wonder if this poll were on MERB if the results would be any different?

His films SHOULD have a serious bearing to bring him back to the United States. Ever hear of psychological abuse? It must be so psychologically abusing to see everyone kiss a media onslaught of this man, that plead guilty to rape of a person under the age of 14 (that's the law, state-by-state basis), in The United States, to an American, in which, under the law, such a plea is evidence of occurrence. The laws have become stronger, retroactivity is another problem.

So this issue is even stronger, punitively. Oh well, back to Law School.

I don't know about Danmand, but for me although it does not excuse the behaviour (and certainly doesn't legaly). It certainly does have a major impact on understanding what happened and why and it certainly means that the mother has some responsiblity in a moral rather than legal sense.

Fuji, the onus is on the adult to verify age, but it can be a causal verification. You don't have to ask for ID. If she looks 18, acts 18 and says she's 18, you have performed due diligence. It is not an absolute standard.

No, you cannot anally, orally and vaginally RAPE a 16 year old. No, you cannot RAPE a 26 year old either. It is illegal to RAPE women of any age, (except maybe in France or Poland or in Allenland).

The one indicator, that everybody here seem to miss, is that the then current DA
in Los Angeles thought it would be reasonable to let him go with no extra punishment
than the time he already had served.

For the record, I am totally against rape of anyone regardless of her age. Furthermore, I have ZERO tolerance for anyone that would choose to bring harm to ANY child in such a circumstance.

Based on what we know... "Polanski had given her a tablet of the powerful tranquilizing drug Quaalude. The director then raped the girl and forced her to commit various sex acts with him". It has been reported that this included oral, vaginal and anal penetration... This being the case, I doubt any decent thinking person would say anything BUT lock him up and throw away the key.
