Good for Harper for not eating the thing. The hosts I've had were so bland and tasteless, they should have fired the baker who made them. Pumpernickel slices would be a great improvement over the hosts - even Timbits would be better.

As for who cares, I think the Catholic church might.
Why? The Catholic Church pays off the families of sexually abused children. Sounds like a worse crime to me.

Is Harper a Catholic? Communion is one of the sacred sacraments of the church. Only Catholics who have previously received 2 of the other sacraments (baptism and confirmation) are allowed to receive communion.
Actually, even Catholics are not supposed to receive the host if they have unconfessed sins. This is why priests usually hear confessions before Mass.

Sheik is right, in the religious and political spheres this is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Given that the P.M. is a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, I’m not surprised that he was at a loss. At the same time as a member of a liturgical denomination I’m a bit surprised that he didn’t just swallow the communion wafer. I'm also a bit suprised that if someone isn't willing to follow through on receiving, that they go up to receive.

By the way the Roman Catholic tradition of placing the bread on the tongue developed do to mediæval communicants superstitiously pocketing and taking away the host.

All right. Let me straighten out this whole thing.

First, I granted your PM an indulgence to do what he did. Secondly, I instructed the priest to "deconsecrate" the host that was given to the PM, so the corpus christi was never desecrated. The whole point of this exercise was to get people talking about Catholic liturgy and tradition. I see once again that I have succeeded.

Now why would your PM embarrass himself just to further my schemes? Let's just say we both have a few tricks up our sleaves.

Oh put a sock in it.

It's been reported that Harper was also standing when he should have been kneeling.
Even better. after almost 40 years of having Papist Prime Ministers (not counting Campbell's few months in office) it's nice to have a PM who doesn't slavishly bow down and kneel before Rome and its minions.

I may not be sure, as I'm Eastern Orthodox (but I think the belief here is similar), but I believe the host must be consumed. Any left over, including the wine, must be consumed by the priest. I wonder what that priest did with the host someone vomited...

Well I can care less. It says he thinks little of catholicism. I've got something in common with him then.

I'm also Catholic and....who cares? Hard core Catholics also know that you're not actually supposed to take the host in your hand and put it to your own mouth. You are supposed to allow the priest to place it on your tongue.
I can tell it's been a long time since you've been to Mass... lol...the placing on the tongue has been discouraged for a long time, unless you have a priest who is very old school. Taking it in the hand is much more hygienic.

Have to agree , particularly after all the stupid stunts Rome has been pulling the last few years.

Just that as leader of our country, he should be a bit more sophisticated. I see today that he nearly missed the G8 photo... again.

There were sunny smiles and laughter for the "family" photo of industrialized leaders and their poorer cousins, masking deeper divisions among the group.

In part, the laughter was prompted by the fact leaders were, once again, waiting for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to show up and take his place for the official photo prior to today's crucial meetings on climate change.

His late arrival at the London G20 photo op in April had prompted jokes about his having been in the "loo."
Very small infractions in the big picture, but just embarrassingly stupid fuck-ups from someone who should know better, and who is representing our nation.

The communion wafer thing would have been far more embarrassing and received much more exposure if it had been a funeral for an international politician.

It's not as if Harper can't speak English or French while talking out of the side of his mouth or has his wife running around fucking The Rolling Stones.

That's something to be embarrassed about.
