PK Subban Retires. Is it too soon, or is he the NHL's Colin Kaepernick?

My bad. I was thinking NFL, not NHL. Point is that it doesn't make sense to go through the grind of an NHL season when he can make similar money as an on-air personality.

The guys on TSN said the main reason he done is he can't skate very well anymore because he has a bad back.

Now, as to the Kaepernick comparison, I just don't see where you are coming from with that. He isn't being black balled because he spoke out against racial injustice, he isn't being black balled at all.
I wasn't thinking race at all in my OP. I was thinking, like Kap, perhaps he is being blackballed because of his mouth and bombastic personality. Kind of like Cam Newton who wore out his welcome well before his talent ran out. That stuff makes for good entertainment value on the radio or the tube, but doesn't necessarily play well on a pro sports roster as a player. I don't think Kap is being blackballed because he's black, but more because he's a shit disturber for any team and the league in general. I suspect there is a healthy dose of that thinking for Subban too, hence the lack of offers.

Apparently the word is he was hoping to sign either with Montreal or Toronto for at least one season. I don't know why Montreal said no, but Toronto has no cap space or room for another d-man. Though, as I said, I would have loved to have him in the blue and white in his prime....

Kap is black balled because he kneeled, and people lost their minds over it. That's why. I'm not saying he was the greatest QB ever, he wasn't. But he was better than many of the middling dudes who played across the league.

As for PK, I think there are traditionalists in the sport who didn't like a showy player, no matter how good they are. That is changing now, partly thanks to him. And, I think it is good for the game. Remember the outrage when Ovechkin pretended his gloves were on fire after he scores a big goal (might have been his 60th or something). Or when Salani pretended to shoot his gloves after he set the rookie mark with 72 goals? I think the NHL should do what ever it can to showcase some of the personalities the superstars have. They need to do this if they ever hope to grab more eyeballs in the US.

Makes sense .. he was never the smoothest skater, but he played with a powerful stride. With injuries he lost that.

I'm sure very soon we'll hear chants of "Subban in the Hockey Hall of Fame".

Quickly followed by the howling and yowling of 'How the hell did Guy Carbonneau and Bob Gainey get in the HHOF!!??"

Every. Single. Year.

OK, I got that from a reporter who covers the team. He says it isn't verified, but that there were some discrete outreach from Subban's camp. Now, there is no way of knowing if that is true or not.

Look at his numbers…he doesn’t belong in the HOF.
They are applying diversity and equity to everything now. Doesn't matter about Subban's numbers. He is going to be HOF eligible at the right time as this surge for diversity and equity ahead of whether there's actually merit is not going away anytime soon.

I work my family's business. My great grandfather who founded the business employed visible minorities based on merit. None of the bullsh*t that is going on right now about hiring a black person to fill a quota is acceptable by our company's standards and our keen focus on maintaining a harmonious culture. We have superb black employees on staff but they have earned their keep.

Subban, even in his prime, was a coach nightmare. Loud and extravagant as it reflected on the ice but responsible for so many turnovers…

He wanted to play one more year but not sure a single team would have taken him. He’s been awful for 2-3 years now.

He will sign a big media deal i’m sure.

Subban means "character" in the Akan dialect in Ghana from where came many of the slaves brought to Jamaica. And what a positive character PK is. With blacks in the GTA in the news for all the wrong reasons, it is comforting to me to see a black man succeed in an overwhelmingly white sport. It speaks to the power of the middle class to nurture children to success as opposed to decimated families producing children lost to gangs, guns and criminality. Whether he belongs in the Hockey Hall of Fame is not as important as the fact that this man who donated $10 million to the Montreal Children's Hospital belongs in the Hall of Fame of Life. Congratulations P.K. You have done yourself and your race immensely proud.

PK Subban is a Norris Trophy winner and an All Star several times. Honest people can disagree whether he belongs in the HHOF based on his numbers. From my perspective, he is borderline and not a slam dunk. But his numbers compare favorably to several hall of famers. So if he makes it, it would be on merit and not because of diversity. From the way you speak, I am 100% certain you would not be employed where you are if your family didnt own the company. You dont sound too bright.

Bahaha.... nice personal dig genius!!! Is that you PK Subban?!!! 😝

His skillset steeply declined and his peak wasn't long enough!!!

Granted, Subban won the Norris in 2013 and finished 3rd two other times. The problem is, he is the complete opposite in the other years. He never did better than 14th any other year!!!

So, he does not deserve to get in based on merit. However, he will get in based on the diversity and inclusion narrative.

Don't like the guy but it makes perfect sense to me. I don't understand why more players don't choose to retire early but instead contine playing long after they've past their prime and their bodies become fucked up beyond repair.
