Yeah Sheik but after the Little Rascals series ended Petey wound up hooked on crack, drank his money away and would get involved with any cheap "bitch" that looked his way. Sad really what happens to child actors

Contray to popular belief
INBREEDING neither makes for a good pet or a decent president.

So remember this when hillery runs, she will turn on her masters

Sheik I loved that dog and I still watch the show whenever it comes on at 5:00 in the morning every once in a while. But Petey wasn't tearing the Little Rascals little faces apart.
If they all acted like Petey I'd own a couple myself.
If you read the article YOU referenced you will see that the rep from the Humane Society was using Petey to show HOW the dogs SHOULD be behaving, not how they ARE behaving. (see below)

"THE BEST-KNOWN pit bull was actually a Little Rascal. Petey -- the pit bull with the eye-patch in the Depression-era Little Rascals movie series -- epitomized the breed's ideal, said Amy White of the Toronto Humane Society.

(key word above: 'IDEAL')

"Goofy, very friendly with people -- children, family members and strangers alike," White said. "That's what pit bulls should be like."

(key word above: 'SHOULD')

PS: Please explain to me how a license for this breed will stop them from killing and maiming people and pets.

In the laboratory.
Geez Sheik, I bet Siegfried and Roy espoused the same line about tigers (the animals, not the Terb member)! Hope you don't come to a similar end :p

It's funny how you never hear of people being attacked by teddy bear hamsters.

Really Retired.....REALLY!
It is exactly as Sheik said, the OWNERS need to be accountable.
You should not own a dog (ANY dog) if you cannot control it.

The problem with pitbulls is the media sensationalizing every god damn attack. You never really hear about german shephards, pr even chiuahuah's attacking people but IT DOES happen. Why are they so focused on pitbulls.... because it gets a reaction, that is why.

Not all large breed dogs are high risk, I have a 9 month old Golden retriever who is at about 85-90lbs, that dog wouldn't hurt a fly. My smaller yellow lab cross wieghing in at 50 or so lbs would be more likely to bite someone, so I keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't ever get the chance to do it.

It is sorta like the ban on walkers for babies because kids kept falling down the stairs, it is not the fault of the walker, it is the fault of the parent for not watching them or putting them in an environment that allowed it to happen.

It is ALL about the owner. IMO

It is all well and good to say the owners are accountable, but can anyone tell me how you can realistically idiot-proof ownership of potentially dangerous dogs?

Sasha, if you can give me a case when a Chihuahua has killed or even maimed someone, I'll agree the media coverage is overblown.

Actually, Sasha, the media is like a wheel. There are hardly ever any new topics, just the same ones with different participants that come around every so often. Both here and the U.K. I have noticed when one dog attack makes big news, they will publicise all of them for a while, making it seem like an epidemic. A number of years ago, it was German Shephards, then Dobermans and Rottweilers.

The media likes to make it look like they are helping the public by spearheading the charge for a ban or whatever they decide looks best to their public. After a while the uproar dies down, but that doesn't mean there aren't any more attacks, just public fatigue of overexposure to the media so they find something else to champion for a while.

I'm sure there are attacks daily by different breeds of dogs, but not all of them get the same amount of attention, it just depends on the flavour of the month.

This month it is Pit Bulls.

Agree with both statements BUT what good does it do to say the 'owner is accountable' after his/her Pit Bull has just killed a child?
The problem with Pit Bulls (and why they should be treated differently than other dogs) is their combination of incredible power and jaw strength. In addition they have a mindset unmatched by other breeds. This dog takes no prisoners. When they get violent............they have just one thing on their minds: KILL!!!!!!
To even compare this dog to Shepherds or Dobermans is assinine.
Sure those breeds are capable of biting someone. No argument. But Pit Bulls are in class by themselves.
I don't know whether you have ever witnessed an attack by a Pit Bull but I can tell you from personal experience it is absolutely terrifying.
When I was a kid I saw 3 grown men beat on a Pit Bull that was attacking our neighbours' 7 year daughter. They hit it with hockey sticks and shovels and the
dog didn't even flinch.
It's all well and good to say that "dogs should be licensed.........and owners held accountable, etc.", but you must be living in Nirvana if you actually believe that will prevent Pit Bull attacks from occurring. It also won't prevent the wrong kind of people from acquiring these dogs. What you'll find is an asshole attending whatever course necessary, and simply pretending that he is not an asshole until he gets his license. Then once he does....... it's back to being an asshole.

Wrong Sasha.
It's because whey Pit Bulls attack people............people die!

The Toronto Sun wrote a good editorial about this problem, which was one of the very few times I've actually agreed with them. The Liberal government wants to ban the dog because right now it seems to be a popular idea. It is *not* a solution, however, because it doesn't deal with the problem of bad breeders and companions training their dogs to be aggressive towards humans.

*ANY* dog can kill a human being if trained to do so. I know many pit bulls who have been raised in loving homes that are more docile than a pet hamster.
