A vehicle that started as a practical tool for hard-working people has become, for many, an obnoxious assertion of dominance and division

I totally agree lol

What the hell is wrong with pick ups? What fresh hell is this? I've been driving pick ups for decades-new every 2 years. They have come a really long way. They're super efficient(when compared to the past models), super comfortable, practical, very safe when used properly and all around great vehicles.

There are many people with trucks who don't need a truck, I think that's the main point of the article, the wastefulness of it. They could do without the hyperbole though ... 7,000 isn't 3 Honda Civics these days, that would be 2 and a bit. A Civic hasn't been sub 2,500 lbs. for a very long time.

The downtown Toronto complaint by a writer who couldn't think of anything else to bitch about.

Moronic story
Let the author drive a smart car to go offroad or drive in a Canadian winter

Most pickups have better fuel economy than SUVs for decades as well

If you need and use the features of a pickup..... fine. But lots of guys just tool around town thinking they are big men because of their big truck...sad. Personally I prefer an SUV... I have no need for a big empty box in the back.

Look i never made made fun of what a pick up truck looks like how good it is on gas or how comfortable they may or not be ....i saw the article and i kinda agreed with it when im driving and pick ups are behind me they tend to ride my ass like they own the road In my experience,my best friend has a pick up truck try wearing heels and jumping into that monster truckits not easy is the ride smooth yes does my friend drive more aggressive in the pick up truck than he does in 4 car sedane absolutely why does he ? good question perhaps just a big toy he feels more superior driving than his car. I've lived all over the north majority of guys have pick up trucks cause there tradesmen ....but what stood out in the article to me is that people arent buying because they need it for tools and wood etc... there buying them more now just for the look of one

Pickups are fine. The assholes that often drive them are not. I’m usually not one to generalize, but if the handful of issues I’ve had with aggressive drivers, whether in my car or on my bike, at least 80% have been with pickup drivers. Always male, between 30-50 years old. Apparently it is some kind of penis substitute for these idiots.

And an F150 is nowhere near 7000 pounds. The heaviest F150 is about 4500 pounds. Maybe an F350 with the crew cab and 8 foot box and a mortar mixer in the box at that is 7000 pounds, but nobody buys an F350 unless you've got a work crew to fill it. In fact, the dealers don't even stock them.

There's a pile of bullshit in that article. The engines available in the Ford half ton pickup truck lineup are no different than the engines available on the entire Ford lineup. You can get a 3.5 litre eco boost on a F150 or an explorer, or a Mustang, etc etc. They all throw the same amount of pollution regardless of what vehicle they are in. Gee is not too swift I can see.

This article is just riddled with mistakes and hyperbole.

Marcus Gee is the king of fluff pieces at the Globe and Mail. He used to cover the City of Toronto political scene when Rob Ford was mayor, but since Tory took over, its been back to boring at the City so old Marcus hasn't had a lot to do. Andrew Coyne he is not.

I don't know about being worse drivers, though certainly different. One interesting observation is that I find female drivers tend to come up and tailgate you for miles on end, without passing, whereas male drivers will come up and tailgate you aggressively, but at least they'll pass when the coast is clear. One woman was tailgating me so bad (like literally half a car between us going 100km/h), I moved over into the opposing lane and let her drive by, before popping back in, effectively doing the pass she should have made for her.

That is it. So many men feel that a truck is “their” vehicle. Like that is what a real man is suppose to drive.

and trucks are just getting out of hand size wise. A pick up truck use to be smaller. Now you have F350s or Ram 3500 when a 150 will do.

Then adding the extended side mirrors that 90% of them don’t need and only use to look cool yet they impede people’s way when paring. Half the big trucks can’t even fit into parking spots making it harder for other vehicles around them.

There is no need for half the trucks on the road other then make ego but I can’t blame men. It is the advertising that made men think this is the “man” vehicle.
