Some of the speed cameras are portable and are being moved around for maximum effect.
All of them are portable. I think some are bolted to little concrete pads but others are not. They weigh 800 lbs but that hasn't stopped people from steeling them.

Whomever runs for Toronto mayor or Ontario Premier should run on a platform that gets rid of all these speed cameras.

Guaranteed landslide victory!

🤣😂
Not even close to a guarantee. These don’t impact that many people. You think those that keep speeding even when there’s a sign warning of photo radar make up that much of Ontario‘s population?

The problem with a sign is that it has a plain colour and can be easily overlooked: roads have many non-traffic direction signs. So, the average driver learned about the camera only after they get the ticket. Actually, I got two right after the camera was installed in my neighbourhood and it took me two drives to actually find the camera warning sign after that.

Some of us pay attention to road signs when we are on the road.
Maybe you should try that some time …. 🤔

Hey, it is all just another front in the WAR Against The Car.

John Tory's campaign slogan is "A traffic light on every corner" !!!

WooHoo.

We need money focused on teaching people how to walk and ride bikes on our City Streets.

I think 'Stop, Look and Listen' has been removed from the grade school curriculum. It is getting us ready for those silent killers - Electric Cars !

Some pay attention to the road instead, especially if you drove on it for a long time already.

It's totally normal. Without your money the government couldn't give 600 million loan to Ukraine. I'm sure they will pay it back! 👍
Do you really think the fines from the City of Toronto are used for that?

I loved that. They give a loan, thereby not affecting the government balance sheet so they can claim we have $620M more than we do. When Russia invades, we're not going to see that money returned. And even if Russia backs off, the chances of us seeing that money is close to nil. But it'll stay on the balance sheet as an asset, balancing out the actual loss we took in giving them that money.

I know what you mean. There's these signs I started noticing recently but people have told me they've been there forever. They're red and have a bunch of sides. Anyone know what they mean? Who would use red boards for something important; maybe they should replace them with some kind of illuminated poles.

Sometimes there are school events like Parent-Teacher interview night, graduation shit, etc... that happen well after school hours.
I should have clarified. It was a very dark Sunday night around 9pm in freezing temperatures. No teacher interviews on Sunday night, zero activity, no one outside, going under 60km/hr. No obvious signs and not my immediate neighbourhood. The second ticket in my life (knock on wood), I am not exactly a careless driver. I agree they serve a purpose at the right times but you literally could be ticketed 24/7/365. It's a cash grab.

I wouldn't be so sure. Canadians love lining up and obeying rules- no matter how idiotic and useless. Most of them don't have the experience and the collective memories of thst other peoples have who learned long, long ago that governments usually do not act in the citizens' best interests.

My understanding is that they also move the cameras from time to time....

Also, won't your employer get pissed at you at some point? I mean, I drive over the limit all the time, but my boss would never get that bill...Stay safe!
There used to be camera on Sheppard, west of Don Mills that got spray painted red on the lens and housing by a helpful vandal. A period of time later it was removed and I noticed a camera on Van Horne Ave with the distinct red paint residue on it, same camera. Is it less of an offense to put a Hefty garbage bag over the camera that spray paint it?

Do you have a smartphone? Download the WAZE app. It lists all the photo radar and red light cameras in the city. Plus, users can flag Cops if they're stopped anywhere as they have the potential to be operating radar.

As for speed limits, if they were truly interested in safety, they'd adopt a policy used in US states. They have two speed limits in school zones and they're punctuated by flashing amber lights during school hours. Fines are also doubled when lights are flashing. In other words, during school hours, the speed is reduced and the fines are doubled. It also means that in off school hours and summer months, speed limits aren't reduced.

Photo radar is a speed tax. The fine goes to the owner of the vehicle (who might not even have been driving), there's no points and it doesn't affect your insurance rates.
I've been using Waze ever since these things started. At first it was 2 cameras per ward - and these would move periodically. They are all listed on the City's website. Now there are 3 and discussion to increase. Waze warns you when you are approaching the cameras. Also warns you of spotted speed radar police. Very helpful reminder of impending traps.

Where I live there is s long stretch where the limit is 80kmh but generally drivers go 80 to 90 kmh. There is a public elementary school at intersection and there is ample warning (going both directions) that the speed limit is 60. So many drivers ignore the limit and stay at 80+ kmh. There are no cameras yet but the homeowners in the area have been given notice by the neighbourhood association. But you cannot believe the number of people who are caught in this 2km stretch of road and I have seen some going over 100 to 120 kmh and lucky for them the police were not stationed there. Once the cameras go in, hopefully the excessive speeding will stop.

If you are a solitary car speeding past a camera, you're probably going to get a ticket but if you are in a pack of cars speeding past, then probably not. Someone on another thread said a cop reviews all photos to determine which ones will stand up.

So the logical conclusion is to speed and tailgate at the same time. What could possibly go wrong?
