I'll do my best to respect my host, but there are two seasons where a lot of visits happen: 1) winter, and it's mighty cold at the floor level. 2) summer, and a good host will invite his guests to the back yard.

Neither of these situations are conducive to removing one's footwear at the door.

I think too many Canadians have lost the fun of wandering inside and outside at will, and have opted for horrible carpeting choices which do not fit well with the Canadian climate and social customs. If I have made my home so uncomfortable for my guests that I would rather have the company of my carpeting than of my friends, I have failed miserably as a human being. If you want to keep your shoes on in my home, I have a vacuum (and a steam cleaner) I can use to tidy up after our visit is done.

To force a guest to take their shoes off, and be uncomfortable? Rude. To force a guest to put shoes on and feel uncomfortable ? Just as rude.
Hosts (good ones, anyway) don't make invited guests uncomfortable.

By the way Don Draper: Dignified is wearing ones spotless oxfords, always.

I was brought up to always take my shoes off at the front door of any home. The only way I might not take my shoes off is if I am bringing in several bags of groceries out from the car to the kitchen.

Sometimes when I buy stuff on the web and have to go to the sellers house to pick it up. I would start to untie my shoes and they would tell me "No, keep your shoes on" I always feel a bit odd for a sec but I do as they ask and keep them on.

Your house, your rules
Exactly this.

anyway I'm really surprised how split people are about this.
I guess it depends how people are raised. In London anyone who grew up with a few pounds in the bank would be horrified at a guest walking around their house shoe-less. It was strictly a thing done by university students and people who had grown up far from the civilized parts of town. I had it drummed into me before I was a teenager. "Our kind of people" are not apes, we wear shoes". LOL I guess we are products of our environments :).

In the US I think they refer to the shoe-less as clod hoppers, but I am not certain. Either way it is a derogatory comment about lack of breeding.

But really, who cares? Do what the hostess wants or walk away :).

It is as silly as "which fork do we use in this house?"

common? no, the average home in toronto has never held a fund raising event- so not common.

I would say its not that common amongst the rich either, though at such events, yes people wear their shoes. but if you are friends with these same people, and are hanging out at their house, then most take off their shoes.
Ok, maybe I am culturally biased. And of course friendship is relative. I am not certain how many parties that expected guest to dress properly occurred in the year we spent in the area but at least a half dozen invitations arrived. So I think it is safe to say they are a regular part of the social season :).

I guess we need to separate people who keep plastic on their chesterfield and people who wear ties to dinner? LOL

Ok I accept that in your social circle everyone wanders around barefoot. :) I guess that also means no cocktail dresses at the parties :(

Actually very good point. I am more relaxed in my attitudes when we have guests over. I focused on responding to the posts from the guests point of view.

Many seem to think they have a divine right to be the arbitrators of good taste.

ROTFLMAO!!! And who is king, I mean queen of that? Hint: the soap dodger. It is common knowledge that Brits keep shoes on in the house because their 'sparing' bathing habits require it. We have lots of water in Canada, and that drives our more particular hygiene habits (similar to having lots of dentists and orthodontists drives our impeccable oral hygiene and orthodontic habits), certainly moreso than you, having been (according to your fake story) raised in the land of weekly baths, would be familiar with.

But you are in the New World now. And in the New World, we have loooonngggg ago abandoned the horrific and archaic hygiene habits of your youth. So take a shower and take off your damn shoes when you are in a Canadian house.

Fucking soap dodgers (shudder).

So University students are akin to apes and you are uneducated. Well there we have it.

Anyway as a sign of respect I always take off my footwear when entering someone's home, unless instructed to do otherwise. Anything less would be uncivilized.

If the home you are entering is comfortable and clean there is absolutely no need for shoes. You actually wear your shoes in your own home after being in them all day? Ick.

the rich people that I know of who wear shoes around thier own house are wearing indoor shoes, i.e. not the same shoes that they would go for a walk in. these same people would not wear 'outdoor' shoes inside someone elses house.

FYI...raccoons are prevalent in Toronto and they routinely crap everywhere. Why is that a big deal? Because it can contain a parasite, which loves to feast on brain stem tissue.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baylisascaris

Notably, the parasite can be a tough little bugger and can live in heat or cold for years.

By wearing your shoes into the house, you can carry in the parasite. If you happen to have kids who routinely love to put stuff in their mouths, then this can happen:

My you are a rude and ignorant little person :). In England peasant stock goes barefoot in houses. People with at least a bit of money wear shoes. Same in Paris. I believe it is also the same in most western European cities and most of US. And of course we had running water long before they managed it in Canada.

Bare feet and stockings are frowned upon.

Nice straw man. My comment was that few I know would find barefoot guests, oor stocking foot guest to be the standard of classy :)

Are there non-peasant stock in England anymore? Seriously, its the most unhygienic nation in the Western world. Its gross. Holding English standards of hygiene and decorum up as examples to be emulated, simply reveals your crudeness, mister. Yuck. I mean seriously, yuck. Civilized nations shudder (shudder) at the thought of being close enough to a Brit to be able to smell them. Yuck.

What part do you not understand . We are not in England , Paris or Western Europe . Who cares what they do over there ??? If the Queen were to wipe her ass with only her hand after taking a shit does that mean that we have to do the same over here .

Any US house I've been in the shoes come off .

Peasant stock ??? Is that the Queen your talking about or is it Good Old Charlie that was fucking around on his wife with an old bag . Just because one doesn't have any money doesn't make them a peasant . It's people with money , talking like that are the true peasants of society. Money doesn't give you class . It just means that people with no class have money .

Gee shoes come off in US houses? News to me and a lot of Americans.

Oh the wiping your ass thing comes from further east, lol not England.

I have no idea what you are going on about money etc. Wandering around other peoples house bare foot or in stockings is just not a universal polite thing. Sorry. It might be what you and your friends do. But it is far from universal.

people don't wander around barefoot. when you are going to someone's house you wear shoes and shoes require socks. when you take the shoes off you are now wearing socks. i would think that you being as proper as you claim to be would find it rude if someone showed up to your "boat" and dragged mud in and just walked around letting it fall where it might. your floors must be disgusting, mine on the other hand are clean enough for people to walk around in socks and not get dirty.

it's not really a matter of believing, this is what i saw and they got the kinda money where they own 53 rental properties that they leave empty year round in case people show up to visit or just to lose money. not talking apartments either the smallest of the houses is 3500 square feet.
