Well hun, even in Canada those pesky sandals show up for part of the year. Without socks. And if people take them off they are bare foot. Gee who'd a thunk? And pretty much if you are living on a boat it is sandal weather
I have no idea how you grew up. My family were merchants for generations. Hardly rich, We only had a house keeper. But not wearing shoes in the public part of the house was taboo. Different strokes for different folks.
I personally find the entire idea of everyone's bare feet in the private parts of my home unappealing. And unless someone discovered a way of making socks a barrier I find them just about as revolting.
I am not saying that my feelings about that are universal or even right. I just know I am not unique, and that I have much right to feel that way as the people who step in the urine on the floor of the bathroom after a drip was there before them have a right to go barefoot
