Because I know that punching someone in the face without actually injuring them will get you anything from probation to a week in jail tops, unless you have a criminal record. If the surrounding facts are particularly bad, the hit might be two weeks.

R v Moquin. Domestic abuse, trial court found that bruising was just common assault, crown appealed and on appeal was determined to be assault causing bodily harm due to the bruises.

Where injury includes bruising around the eyes they will spend time in jail. A punch that can be heard like the one in post #1 is certainly going to leave a bruise. If you hit someone open hand and don't leave a bruise then you would get a common assault charge and yes likely a suspended sentence or community service or some such.

Of course I doubt that the person doing the hitting knows whether they are going to break a nose, leave a bruise, etc., and so you certainly take your chances in hoping that the victim winds up bruise free!
