You're far better off to go in person, provided the wait isn't too long.

If you mail in your application, you have to send the originals of the documents you use to support your identity. If you apply in person, they photocopy your documents on the spot and return them to you right away.

It also reduces the overall processing time. When I obtained a new passport last year, it arrived six days later.

Go tot he scarborough town center passport offices. Less wait.
- The Offices at Yonge and Sheppard are quick but the lineups are Crazy.

- Lots of colour pictures getting rejected, you might want to stick to black and whites

- You need someone to co-sign your forms for you. A posice offices, lawyer, doctor, engineer, they give you a list in the forms of who's accepatable I got my accountant to do it. It must be someone who's known you for longer then 4 years I think (might be 5 years)

- If you pay an extra fee of 30$ you can get the passport back within 5 business days.

- You don't need to "prove" you're leaving the country 'cause hey, it's not a free service.

- do book a day off work AFTER getting all your pictures and signatures. Depending on where you go you will need the whole day.

Another possibility to consider is your MPs' office. I picked up my application there and took it home and got all the paperwork I needed. I took the application and papers back in the unsealed envelope, the staff at the office looked everything over to make sure all was in order (better than having it go all the way to the Passport Office before getting it rejected for a missing signature or date) and once it was all done they sealed it and sent it in the MP mail to Ottawa (once a day I believe).
When the passport was done everything was sent back through the MPs mail to his office and they called me to go pick it up.
Really easy for me - then again, I'm in Kingston so I don't have the option of a local passport office anyway.
Didn't cost me a cent in postage, I felt it was more secure than regular mail (I could be wrong there, just a feeling), and there was no lineup when I dropped it off or picked it up. I did it last fall, and from start to finish maybe 4-5 weeks.

Not unless you have a plane ticket that shows you are leaving the country within 14 days you are able to get your passport the same day but it costs a bit more.
So how do they check your references? I know there's an expedited process but sameday??? I dunno about that...

Dual citizenship is currently allowed by both British and Canadian governments. You should have no problem retaining both.

There's also an office in downtown Toronto.

Suite 300
74 Victoria Street

This office is half a block north of Adelaide and one very small block east of Yonge. Closest subway is King.
Things have changed a lot in that area 17 years later. Watch out for used needles.
