Just a matter of time - if he stays healthy. A few more years to go - records are meant to be broken. Hate to see that one go from WG99 though.

He’s only won 1 Cup, though. I‘ve heard others on The Fan describe his career as a “great hockey card”- ie. great stats but limited play off success. Fairly or otherwise, “chips” are always taken into consideration.

I never saw a player any happier and celebrating more with the cup than he did.

For a highly gifted goal scorer he is not afraid of playing a hard hitting style of game.

I am sure Gretzky will be one of the first people to congratulate him if he breaks the record.

Because he does adds for sports books? (I know somebody here ripped him because of that.)
No, because he's been quiet about what's going on in Canada, but speaks up about the war in Ukraine, political puppet.

Isn't he of Ukranian heritage?

I dare say that he's less of a puppet to his heritage than Ovechkin is a political puppet for Putin.

So I am still a bit confused by your position.

Never liked Ovy.....Have no reasonable explanation why.

Loved it when he got bounced from the playoffs year after year.

Will admit he is the best goal scorer of all time. He's done it in a tougher era than Wayne. Straight up.

Don't lose sleep over it.
I'm not but I think that it's a valid question.

You don't like Gretzky's approach to the war in Ukraine such that it lowers your opinion of him, but you're cool enough with Ovechkin's stance such that he is uplifted in your eyes.

What is the difference aside from which side they take?

Nothing to do with Ukraine and Russia, everything to do with Canada.

I felt the same about Ovi, especially when it was his name and Crosby's in any conversation and it always will be Crosby for me.
But over the past couple of years I started to like him a bit more, maybe because he seems more humble? If that's possible?
Hard to explain, but I hope he does it, it would be cool to see happen.

Right because the atrocities “claimed” by some to be suffered in Canada, are anywhere close to Ukraine.

Mario scored 690 goals in only 915 games. That is .754 goals per game
Ovi scored 822 goals in 1347 games. That is .610 goals per game.
Wayne scored 894 goals in 1487 games. That is .601 goals per game.
Bossy scored 573 goals in 752 games. That is .762 goals per game.
I'd rank Bossy and Mario as the two best goal scorers of all time and probably lean more on Mario as the best.
Even Brett Hull at 741 goals in 1269 games for .584 goals per game is more in the Wayne and Ovi grouping.

Goals are not the only measure of a hockey player.

If you look at assists, you'll find that Gretzky would still be the all time NHL scoring leader
#1 Gretzky: 894 G, 1,963 A, 2,857 Pts
#2 Jagr: 766 G, 1,155 A, 1,921 Pts [in 246 more games played than WG, about 3 seasons]

I was never Gretzky's biggest fan because I wasn't (and still not) an Oilers fan, but the guy did put up numbers that no one else will ever reach.

Matthews has 302 goals in 482 games. That's .627 goals per game.
That would put him ahead of Bure.
302 is more than 200 the last time I checked.
