"I'm not in politics".

'Please, no more war': Alex Ovechkin responds to Russia's invasion of Ukraine - The Athletic

When asked if he supports Putin as the president leads the invasion of Ukraine, Ovechkin reiterated how he hopes the attack ends soon.

"Well, he is my president. But how I said, I am not in politics. I am an athlete and you know, how I said, I hope everything is going to be done soon," Ovechkin said. "It's (a) hard situation right now for both sides and everything. Everything I hope is going to end. I'm not in control of this situation."

It's a hard situation for both sides? As if Ukraine is in the same situation as Russia?

I hope everything is going to end soon? That could very well mean that he hopes Russia totally annexes Ukraine very soon.

Ovy is a coward in a hockey uniform.

He looks terrified to speak out. I don't think he knew putin was the madman he is when he photo'd with him. This may well end his career, any showing of support of putin while living in the usa could be career ending. Will he be booed mercilessly on the road, can he handle that? The press will be relentless with him too, the guy today hammered him, that won;t stop anytime soon.

Oddly enough Gretzky is Ukrainian, I think his support for him breaking his record will be a lot less now.
In spite of his public comments, does anybody really think that 99 at all supports his record being broken?

How many players of Ukrainian heritage are currently in the league. Maybe one of them will try to take Ovie out.

That's why i wrote in another thread he should have taken a few weeks off.
what would 2 weeks off do for him? The guy said he has no hold on politics and probably don't know the mechanics of the invasion. He expresses he wants it done soon.

Central Ont. between here & there
"Mogilny defected from the Soviet Union in 1989 at a time in history prior to the Berlin Wall coming down. He put his safety in legitimate jeopardy when he joined the Sabres, "

If anything things now have gotten worse under Putin. People who cross Putin often end up dead.
Alexander Mogilny's Hall of Fame snubs becoming laughable - Sportsnet.ca
I recall reading a story years ago where the FBI or other type US agency arrested & charged some Russian enforcer who were working or plotting to kidnap Mogilny as he left an arena after a game or practice while playing for Buffalo. A training staff member who was a friend mentioned when traveling, the Sabres had security in rooms both sides of his room & players were booked into rooms above & below Molgilny's room as a bubble

Listen he has shown multiple times in the last 15 years that he is a Putin man. His social profile was still showing him and Putin as of yesterday. The fact that he says he does not do politics is pure BS. He as done so for 15 years.

He lost all my respect. I know he doesn't care.

Apparently sponsors are fleeing Ovechkin in droves. Good.

Contrast Ovechkin's tacit support for Putin (and don't ever kid yourselves, Ovechkin has not changed his outlook on being part of "Team Putin") and that of Nikita Zadorov of the Calgary Flames who continues to post to his social media accounts about "No War" and "Stop It".

I guess that means the Leafs have to get rid of Mikheyev and Lyubushkin.

The London Knights played the Ukrainian national anthem before their game Friday...as far as the two Russians playing for the Knights, there was no reaction, no booing, nothing...

As an avid hockey fan---yup, Rangers 4, Jets 1 last night--I haven't come across the real story about the Russians in the NHL or even about those in the KHL who may come over after their playoffs are done. To wit, how are they getting back home to Russia after the season, and then how are are they going to get back to USA/Canada for next season. Seems that there are no flights coming/going from North America to Russia.

I assume that they can fly to a 3rd country that still has flights to and from Russia.
