"I'm not in politics".

'Please, no more war': Alex Ovechkin responds to Russia's invasion of Ukraine - The Athletic

When asked if he supports Putin as the president leads the invasion of Ukraine, Ovechkin reiterated how he hopes the attack ends soon.

"Well, he is my president. But how I said, I am not in politics. I am an athlete and you know, how I said, I hope everything is going to be done soon," Ovechkin said. "It's (a) hard situation right now for both sides and everything. Everything I hope is going to end. I'm not in control of this situation."

It's a hard situation for both sides? As if Ukraine is in the same situation as Russia?

I hope everything is going to end soon? That could very well mean that he hopes Russia totally annexes Ukraine very soon.

He has lots of family back in Russia, he risks harm to them if he openly criticizes Putin. Even harm to his family here too.
Sad but true.
"Mogilny defected from the Soviet Union in 1989 at a time in history prior to the Berlin Wall coming down. He put his safety in legitimate jeopardy when he joined the Sabres, "

If anything things now have gotten worse under Putin. People who cross Putin often end up dead.

I believe that other Russian athletes have spoken more strongly that Kvechkin and they must have family back home as well. Russian citizens are openly protesting in the streets, which is virtually unheard of, and getting arrested. I believe that 2,000 were arrested yesterday.

It's no secret that he's a Putin fanboy, but it's best for him not to say anything and just focus on hockey.

I feel for AO8, it must be tough to see his family over there and he knows what's right and wrong - but he also knows how powerful Putin is. Its that simple - power will always win. Putin has a security team around him and another security team around the that security team and probably another layer - you can't touch that guy but he can find you. Stay quiet AO8 and quietly go about breaking WG99 record. I don't want that to happen but I see it coming.
