Secret to cheap steaks.

I do not know if this is true of the Outback restaurants, but there use to be a chain called Ponderosa steak houses ( it was also called Bonanza steak houses in the states. They use to serve realy cheap steak diners. The secret is that they used range fed cattle, which means that they get a heard of cattle and dump them in the outback. They go and check on them once in a while. they may loose a few to dingos and injury, but a some are born on the range so it evens out. Years later they go collect these lean and muscular cattle and bring them in for slaughter. The difference between range fed that feeds off grass and natural shrubs and the ranch grain fed cattle is that the range fed ones have realy tough meat. These chains restaurants marinate the meat in papya and pineapple juice to tenderized the tough meat before it is served to the public.

A great chain restaurant IMHO is PF Chang's.

I wish they would open up a location in Toronto. This restaurant has great food, great service and reasonable prices.
I eat at PF Changs often in Florida. I enjoy it - not upscale dining, but a cut above Outback. Packed during the rush perod - 1 hour wait to get a table - but I go off-peak when there is no wait. Trouble is it is as much Chinese as Outback is Australian lol. In Florida this doesn't matter so much...but here in Toronto where we are used to a lot of authentic Chinese food I'm not sure PF Chang's would go over well - maybe it would...I don't know for sure. I'd go to it.

Personally, I wouldn't shed a tear if every chain restaurant closed down. Then again, there is a need for them as they are popular to some degree and they do provide valuable, albeit low end dead end jobs for many people. Outback was one of those that I never understood. The association of the Outback of Australia and a restaurant chain I think was flawed from the onset - never made sense to me.

Are you talking about Earl's, they are known to be racist in their hiring practices, because they want a certain clientele and do not hire those who are different from this clientele? Their concept would not work in the GTA, but perhaps in places like Barrie or Kingston it might work. But in places like Calgary, the only Canadian city that would accept George Bush for a speech recently, Earl's thrives. Anywhere where Rush Limbaugh would be welcome or the former Reform Party had seats would be where Earl's prospers.
Also, I didn't think that Outback could survive in GTA, as far back as 5 years ago, when I had dinner and they charged four dollars for their appetizer, which was a deep fried whole onion, tasted horrible and was a joke as was their mediocre menu, and service. Perhaps their Australian concept was good, but their implimentation and quality control was substandard.

Earl's is a very popular eatery out West, always lined up on the weekends but food is pretty generic, okay. Targets the mass market and really is the same as all the other chains.

In the laboratory.
People's discretionary expenditures are going to plummet in these economic times so it's going to be rough on all restaurants. In north Toronto, it's interesting to see the empty storefronts where little independents once were.

We were a group of 10 at Earl's in Square One.

There were two waitresses, both of whom were stacked. One girl was Asian and the other was Caucasian. Both were knock outs. The Asian girl was showing off her tits far more than the white girl.

And I do recall seeing other visual minorities working there.

The joint was packed also, but it was before Xmas.

It's really a shame! I will miss their blooming onions and their grilled salmon. I love choices, now we have 1 less choice and that's not a good thing.

The secret is that they used .....
what they could find in the loser's circle at Woodbine. They then tenderized it to point where it was of a texture that in no way resembled meat, horse or otherwise.

I have never had a bad Rockhampton ribeye at Outback. When they first opened in Ottawa they were only opened for dinner but half of the staff was in at noon to spend the afternoon cutting up their fresh veggies. They always did those perfectly. Their salmon was also always good. we didn't go there often only because at their price points we wanted a non-roadhouse venue.

The best blooming onions used to come from this chip wagon in the Byward market..

It reminds me of the Olive Garden frankly in that whenever I went to an OB, it was always busy (though never as packed as the Olive Garden was) and yet they could not make a go of it.
The Olive Garden is a disgusting, higth salt, pre-processed pan of lard and grease created through BoA Ken Lewis credit default swapping. Apparently so was Outback. All designed to provide processed crappy food and keep Ma & pa from creating a good restaurant.

Speaking of restaurants, did they ban the singing of "Happy Birthday" because it is copyrighted? I remember whenever I'm sitting in a restaurant, someone at the next table would always stand up and say: "Hey everybody, it's Bob's birthday!" Then the group and the wait staff would burst into: "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Bobbbbbbbbb.":p

BTW: I don't eat red meat. Don't want to get cancer or a heart attack at age 45.

I agree. I happened to like the steak. Maybe not better then Keg style, but the service, and the over priced food at the Keg is not my ideal dining expereince all the time. Plus the huge lines, etc. It is just nice to have other options.

Best steak is still the one I BBQ at home.

Have you been to the Keg since they remodelled? the one by the Sheraton Centre even had white tablecloths when we went there. It was a completely different and classier atmosphere

Have you tried the beef tenderloins?

Throw a couple of them on the BBQ with a little BBQ sauce (of your choosing), some Montreal or Keg steak spice along with some of those large scallops and a couple butterfly shrimps, some baked potatoes and maybe some grilled veggies...

Delicious!

As far as casual dining, yes Keg is by far better than Outback... I think I have been to Outback 2 times in my life... no loss for me personally, but unfortunate for the employees.

The Keg in Niagara Falls on the 9th Floor of the Embassy Suites Hotel is very nice. Tables overlooking the falls, and at 10:00 pm there's Fireworks!

http://www.fallsviewrestaurant.com/

Taking the SO there on Friday...

Fallsview isnt what you;d expect. Its not the cleanest, not the fanciiest. Its a typical tourist place. Fod wasnt great or anything really good about it, typically buffet fare, basic deserts and salads... Wouldnt recoomend it, not sure what i would recommend in Niagara actually... not the falls area at least.
