Benjamin Button was a decent movie but not worth 13 noms. I thought Revolutionary Road and Gran Torino were better.

Batman lost me completely when the dude got his face burned off and walked around with a lose eyeball.

When that awful dreck Working Girl won an Oscar, it was clear that the Academy had its head up its collective ass. It was truly awful. Yes, Harrison Ford was in it, as was Sigourney Weaver. It still stunk.

Then when American Beauty won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan, well, that just sealed it. AB was a good movie, absolutely, but wasn't even in the same league as SPR.
Actually it was SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE that beat SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

I think the Weinsteins bought the Oscar that year.

Oscars is politics and lots of lobbying by certain groups. One of the greatest, Hitchcock, never won. Without a doubt Gran Torino, Slumdog, Kiterunner should all get something. Dark Knight- good movie, best superhero movie, but for best picture? not sure...not "artsy" enough I guess. There was a famous director, forget his name. Said in order to win the film has to be "artsy" and/or made/funded by a Jew (he was Jewish himself).

Right on the money. A client of mine in the movie business said that to win you must keep in mind the magic 3: Jews, Gays, Extreme Leftism - pick any two.

Pretty good rule of thumb.

Rourke got nominated for the Wrestler right? I consider him winning a minimum standard for the right to consider yourself an awards show.

Benjamin Button will sweep the technical awards, which I'm guessing are at least half the nominations it recieved.

These actors make enough money, but they like to stroke their ego's with these BS awards.
You have to be an acadamy member to be able to vote and you wouldn't believe the lobbying that goes on to get your work nominated. It's the same with any of the awards. I have a couple of friends in the industry who are members and they receive calls an emails asking for their support for all different types of awards.
It's not about popularity or success of a show it's about how well they lobby.

I'm still trying to figure out how Sean Penn, DIDN'T get an Oscar for Sam I am... Incredible film, and a brilliant performance. (Not to mention, my ATF Michelle Pfeiffer looked fantastic in that film!)
Haven't watched Tropic Thunder yet? It explains Sean's issue quite clearly :).

Who gives a flying fuck what award a movie or actor receives or doesn't receive. If you enjoy a film that's what matters. Do you need affirmation by some self-appointed big wig at the Academy to tell you the movie you like was actually good or bad, or that an actor is good or sucks cock?

I never watch that drivel. I sometimes watch music awards though, because it's actually entertaining. They sing and dance on stage in addition to telling jokes.

Dark Knight was awful. I am not a fantasy fan and have seen only the first Batman movie (only saw the first Spiderman movie too). But when TDK started getting all the hype about being so brilliant a film, I started asking around to see whether it was worth my time, and whether I needed to know about the plots of all the other batman movies before I saw it. I was assured that it was amazing and that it was a standalone film.

After watching it, I think its only a "brilliant" movie for those who are diehard fantasy or Batman fans. I was not impressed at all by the cold, dead acting of Batman himself, by the story, or even by Ledger. I can understand how it can be seen as an artful movie within the fantasy genre but in comparison with other genre of films, it simply is not very good. My gut feel is that those who loved TDK are (mostly) big time fantasy fans.

3. Eastwood was great in Torino, not even a nomination, get real, probably his last flick.
You are joking right? A nomination for Gran Torino? Yeah right, you might as well give one for Jackass. That movie was lame in every aspect.

I agree totally. Jackass was lame.

Gran Torino, on the other hand, I found very entertaining. I'm also sure the ending was unexpected by most. He really gave them their comeuppance.

Love the Oscars

While I agree that this years "movies" have not had the impact of years past, I still love the pagentry of the Oscars and review of year's best.

Nixon-Frost......outstanding performances between the two. ..but really only a movie to those of that era. ***

Slumdog Millionaire....excellent feel good movie with great soundtrack and true peak into the underbelly of 3rd World realities. My one of two picks for Movie of the year. Would classify it as a Must see for great entertainment value too.

Doubt....................hesitated to see because of the topic but was brilliantly presented. The two antagonist are both legitament Oscar nominees. A movie to see with a group of people, as you will want to discuss afterwards. It will be used for years as debating flick for universities in the Social Services. Not nominated for movie of the year but I would give it a ****

Reader.................heavy intriging movie with the Holocast theme. Top performance. Would not make it the movie of the year but it is UP there in again making one thing about choices in life. ***

The Dark Knight......agree only a genuine movie for this art form of Super Heroes. However, I have never been interested in any of them. I must say, it was a pleasant surprise and I say Heath Ledger...truly stole the movie and will forever be remembered for this role. Not a true Oscar rated movie but highly worthwhile for an introduction to the new Batman series. ***

The Wrestler.........Mickey Rouke..........who can not feel good for a come back attempt. Worthy role which represents his life. Oscar performance...maybe if there is a sentimental vote for the underdog but not a great movie otheriwise. He really is messed UP.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button........long long........I did not particularly enjoy it, some left theatre during. However, because of its originality a possible winner for those voters at the Oscar. Not my cup a tea and I do not see it surviving the test of time. Not a movie to see a couple of times.

Slumdog Millionaire........my bet and a movie you will enjoy many times, as will Doubt.
