Can't believe the annoucements yesterday for the oscars. How can this be possible:

1. Dark Night not nominated for best film or for best director, what a shame.
2. Benjamin Button nominated for 13 awards??? Come one, way over rated movie, fun, but no way a classic. What's worse, Kate Blanchett is hot and was pretty good in the movie, but no nomination for her.
3. Eastwood was great in Torino, not even a nomination, get real, probably his last flick.
4. Springsteen didn't even get nonimated for his song in Wrestler, and there was room, only 3 songs this year, they could have 5, wtf???
The list goes on, the academy is losing credibility, no wonder ratings went down last year. And who is that guy hosting this year????

I'll probably still watch it, nominating Marissa Tomei for supportinig actress as a stripper saved it for me, lol.

1. Dark Knight was over rated. Heath Ledger will win Best Supprting Actor
2. No opinion
3. Academy probaably thinks he's won enough.
4. There's some convoluted new rule about the nominated song having to appear in the body of the film, not the credits. But everyone's doing a WTF on that.

1 - I agree - Should have been best picture nom
2 - Button way overrated - definitely not worth 13 noms, especially Pitt for actor - come on
3 - Agreed - anything Eastwood does these days is top quality
4 - Two songs from Slumdog but Springsteen (the GG winner) doesn't make the cut - its like when that Disney movie had 3 best song nominations in one year.

Now the fact that Revolutionary Road got almost completely shut out is what really shows the Academy is out of touch.

Agreed. The Oscars are completely out of touch with the public, and I think that's gonna cost them huge rating this year. The Reader or The Curious Case of Forrest Gump over The Dark Knight? I wish the Academy would get off their high horse about so called "comic book movies".

And the Springsteen thing is just the final bullet in their aging skull. The biggest name performing at this year's show is going to be Peter Gabriel. Should be a fun night, all!

Don't know who got nominated, but this was my LEAST favourite of the Batman movies. If Heath wasn't dead, no one would be talking about him.

I don't get the hype over Dark Knight for best movie... The story wasn't oscar worthy. Special effects; stuff we regularly see, nothing revolutionary.

The only oscar for that film should go to Heath for acting.

Sounds like a synopsis of Peter Howell's column in the Star today.

they still do the oscars? I hadn't noticed themina few years I just sort of assumed they'd been cancelled.

Hopefully, The Watchmen will be done well and will be nominated for best picture next year. I can picture the extra's on the DVD with all the end of chapters stuff.
I can't imagine any way Hollywood does not screw that movie up.

In its heyday, the Oscars were a good guide to movies destined to be classics worth owning on VHS or DVD.

For the past decade+, it's not even a good guide for movies I'd care to rent. American Beauty as best picture? Hardly on the scale of Titanic, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Casablanca, even Fargo.

Nevermind that Dark Knight was a comic book movie... never mind that Bat Man has been done over and over again.

Take out the words Bat Man and Joker in the movie dialogue... and what are you left with??

I'm not even a fan of Heath Ledger... but you have this crazy wicked performance, who you can't even tell is Heath Ledger... his voice and mannerisms made him become someone we've never seen before. And you also have a fantastic musical score (pay attention to the electric cello whenever the Joker is around) and you have these amazing action sequences that integrate a lot of live stunts done on the set instead of CGI.

This was a well made movie overall and deserves a best picture nod.

Anyways... we all know it was the best picture of 2008.

I lost all respect for the industry when I found out 'Driving Miss Daisy' was not a porn.
Think how I felt sitting on the couch, masturbation kit on the TV tray and a full-on log in my hand waiting for the TV show "Taking it Off".

When that awful dreck Working Girl won an Oscar, it was clear that the Academy had its head up its collective ass. It was truly awful. Yes, Harrison Ford was in it, as was Sigourney Weaver. It still stunk.

Then when American Beauty won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan, well, that just sealed it. AB was a good movie, absolutely, but wasn't even in the same league as SPR.

Past winners---like Jack Palance, or movies like Braveheart or Titanic---will have their reputations ruined by being associated with the poor quality choices that have been made this year.
