I had witnesses and she admitted it at the scene, so I no problems with insurance. I had to go to a couple of "their" doctors, but even they agreed with my doctors.

This is true only if you're holding it......its when you dial or text while driving is the issue.

That's the first part. Then they need anti-itch, anti-sneeze, anti-cough, and any other type of medication/treatment because these are distracting too. Need to get rid of all vanity plates, and I think we need to move to a Middle East approach where ladies are covered up. No billboard ads, heck no street signs as reading the name of the exit coming up is a distraction. My dashboard info is also a distraction too.

This reminds me of a scene in Long Kiss Goodnight where Samuel L Jackson is driving and sees a jogger with big boobs. He honks and whistles and skids off the road onto a shoulder for a second.

Those laws were already on the books, you just have to watch out for homeless drunks at street-corners

Except the reason for the increased fines and suspensions is to reduce collisions and deaths on the roads. That's what the law makers preach, safety. They're not intended to penalize people for taking extra second to two to react to the light turning green. Do you really want law makers to go down that road?

I drive a fair amount and my number one complaint is distracted drivers. And by that, I mean drivers who are on their phones while in motion. I see way more of these idiots on a daily basis than I do people taking an extra second to react when the light goes green.

If someone ahead of me is distracted to the point where they don't see the light change, I simply toot my horn. It usually gets their attention pretty quickly. Yes, it can be annoying, but it certainly isn't dangerous. Nobody's ever caused a collision and killed someone while stopped at a traffic light looking at their phone.

But like TEEJAY said "most tickets are being written for holding it or stopped at a red light." Which has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with revenue generation. If LE was truly concerned about "safety" they'd charge the offenders in motion. But they don't and won't. They'll simply continue to go after the low hanging fruit, all in the name of "safety." It's truly pathetic!

Not to mention, when your insurance company raises your rates due to a "distracted driving" conviction, there's no distinction between texting with your eyes fixated on your phone, in your lap, on the 401 at 100 km/h or reading a text while stopped at a light, in heavy traffic. Knowing you won't be moving for 30-45 seconds. It's absolutely ridiculous!

Ontario's New Driving Laws Will Mean Automatic Suspension Of Driver's Licences For Distracted Driving

Tougher road rules are coming this 2018.

Ontario is implementing new driving rules that will mean automatic suspension of driver’s licences for convicted distracted drivers.

Constable Clint Stibbe of the Toronto police went on 680 NEWS on Monday and confirmed this, saying “the law has been passed” and that “it’s now just a matter of time.”

Moving forward, distracted drivers will receive a licence suspension as well as a substantial fine. The suspension period and fine amount will vary depending on the number of subsequent offences:

First offence: 3 days suspension and $1,000 fine
Second offence: 7 days suspension and $2,000 fine
Three or more offences: 30 days suspension, $3,000 fine and six demerit points

Officers will not be allowed to seize driver’s licences at roadside. Only under a judge’s approval and after the driver is found guilty will the driver’s licence be suspended.

The tougher laws will come into effect sometime in the next few months. They were created in attempt to reduce the amount of distracted driving, which accounted for 7,435 crashes in Toronto in 2016.

I think they are still way too lenient. If you are distracted while driving you can kill someone! 1,000 distracted people will eventually kill one person. That is one person too many and it should be considered a crime. IMHO, you have no business driving if you cannot be trusted to be paying full attention to what you are doing.

i'd love to see much stricter penalties for those convicted of distracted driving particularly 3 times or more including criminal record entries (make it difficult to be hired) and jail time, so people understand society does not want them driving.

I would like to see texting and driving treated in exactly the same way as drunk driving.
