Powell:
The former secretary of state said he has been racially profiled "many times," including an incident that took place while he was the national security adviser to President Reagan.

"Nobody thought I could possibly be the national security adviser to the president. I was just a black guy at Reagan National Airport," Powell said. "And it was only when I went to the counter and said, 'Is my guest here waiting for me?' that someone said, 'Oh, you're Gen. Powell.' It was inconceivable to him that a black guy could be the national security adviser."

When asked how he dealt with the situation, Powell said, "You just suck it up -- what are you going to do? It was a teaching point for him. 'Yes, I'm the national security adviser, I'm black, and watch, I can do the job.' "

Powell's quote reminds me one from Royson James of the Star, when he was describing a similar case of racial profiling, almost 20 years ago. It wasn't called profiling back then, just a personal incident in his life of prejudice, or pre-judging based on race, and was part of his articles thesis, on how every black person has experienced it.

He was just a young cub reporter for the Star, his story goes. He rings a ladies door bell in Forest Hill, for a prearranged interview.
"She goes, "Are you here about the pool?"
Young Royson is shocked. Shocked. Him being in a suit and tie and all.
See, it "Seems the old racist was waiting for a Star interviewer, and a pool guy at roughly the same time. And despite his tie, it was obvious that she couldn't conceive that the black man ringing the bell might be the reporter.
Royson, big fellow that he is, sucked it up and did the story.
But it scarred him. Scarred him for life.

I remember thinking then, as I did now, "WTF? That's your beef?"

For some reason, I used to wear a biker jacket and black clothes during my university days. As a skinny white kid in a biker jacket, I probably experienced more cases daily pre-judging and profiling by cops, mall guards, and little old ladies in one day, then Royson and Collin did in their entire lives.

Frankly, I think Royson's lame story is the more shocking of the two. I'm just glad the two of them didn't have a freak attack on the perps, and end up getting arrested over it.

In a related incident, I just saw a security guard take down a shoplifter outside Walmart last week. It took literally six people, two undercovers, and four bystanders to hold him prone, while the guards got cuffs on him.

He was a tiny little bastard, but wiry, and was bucking and squirming like a wet lizard.

In the crowd that gathered to rubberneck with me, was a black broad who was going full bore, rabid, "Gates" on the guards.

"This isn't right! Yes he stole, but you shouldn't treat him like that! This is racism."

"Shut up lady, and let us do our jobs."

"Don't you tell ME to shut up. He's black, I'm black, this is racism!" On and on, non-stop, Blah, blah, blah....

Other black people in the crowd are nodding approval and muttering.

Judging by her accent there was no way she was born in Canada. But now she has a story too.

In a related incident,
Sorry, I meant totally, and absolutely unrelated incident. True story, but I just mainly wanted an excuse to segue the expression "Going Gates" into the post.

Anyone else ever see a guy "Going Gates" over nothing?
I'm going to ask in the Lounge to maximize the fun.

You are probably right. Miss Whalen probably wants her life back. Wonder what she would do if she had the chance to go back in time. To call or not to call? That is the question.
She did everything right.

Consider that if Sergeant Crowley had not (allegedly) mis-stated her words/actions in his report, none of us would even know who Ms. Whelan is.

Save for the fact that I believe it was 85 percent Professor Gates' ego, 10 percent Professor Gates' jet lag and at the most five percent anything having to do with Sergeant Crowley I basically agree
.
We agree on the contributing factors.

I find it hard to apply a percentage to "wrong". They were both "wrong".

How on earth do you equate Ronson's remarks to Powells???

Ronsons going on about how hes "scarred for life" over that....yeah that is over the top.

Powell is just simply recounting a story that happened to him as a matter of fact and is not blowing anything out of proportion

LOL...Robinto...dont profess to know about something you know absolutely nothing about.

Yes racial profiling can happen to all groups...whites included....and I'm sure that you appearing to be a biker will garner a different response than if you were come Aber Crombie and Fitch poster boy....

But you're not black so how would you know what your average black person would have to endure? Just like I'm not white so I wouldnt know what your average white person would have to endure.

it happens...leave it at that

Um, where is the profiling here? Somebody at the airport didn't recognize the 'great' General on sight so it's because he's black?

Powell said he was subjected to profiling 'many' times over the years, which is not a surprise at all.

This "circle the wagon" mentality is not helpful. I seem to recall a study in the U.S. that showed the vast majority of victims of "Black crime" are other Blacks, especially the elderly and the poor.

I know exactly how he feels. Someone called me "short" (no, it wasn't a woman) once and I am now scarred for life. BTW I am NOT short:mad: .

While I only watched the first five minutes (and they were the only five minutes of Glenn Beck I've watched) I have to say he's spot on..... a bit of a theatrical nut, but spot on.

Sort of a degrading and debasing comment you have there.

I find it hard to believe you are allowed to post such things.
