Seems like new talk will occur next week in this city after 3 months of silence. Looks like Bob picked up the phone to call Gary. Negotions seems to be more about bravado and image and it seems like the NHPLA blink first. Let's hope they get the messege and get down to some real negotiating

In all honesty ... I hope they don't get any closer. It's absolutely crazy the money that's paid for playing a sport.

I think doctors that save lives deserve this kind of money.

They don't. They watch actors. Not doctors.

NHLPA = 'it's not about the money, it's about the principal'

it is the nhlpa taking this stance that is the reason their is no hockey being played... if the can leave their pride out of the equation then they will be able to make some sort of progress to negotiations, which, hopefully is the case... the NHL is a business and yes, tell them donkeys it IS about the money!

I hope nobody gets a hard-on thinking that this means an end to the lockout is on the horizon. To me this is all about optics. The players have been on the losing end of the PR war as far as the fans go. I think this attempt is simply a meaningless gesture on the part of the NHLPA.
Bottom line is the owners are holding all the cards.
They are much more prepared to wait this out than the players.
The owners want a cap, and any form of anything less is not going to be accepted. Only time will tell whether or not the players give in, but it sure won't happen when they meet next week.

I think it is all a show. The NHLPA and the NHL will meet, they will talk and in the end the players assoc. will again state that they have brought an alternative to a cap but the owners won't budge blah blah blah......same crap different week neither side getting their head out of the clouds. At this point, i'm looking forward to the world junior championship and that's about all.

smoke and mirrors - NHLPA saving face

Its all PR work now -

Rumor has it that the PA proposal doesn't include cost certainty. The owners will not accept that.

Theyre talking about rolling back the salaries, increasing the threshold amount and increasing the penalty for exceeding the threshold.....BUT no cap.

The players are going to insist to a 75% revenue share. Similar to the NFL.

At this point I don't understand something. I'm not really a fan of any one sport. But.....

if the owners are fronting the cash for - arenas, salaries, bonuses, farm teams, player development, administrative expenses etc....aren't they entitled to a profit for themselves?

the players are paid to play...period. if they have a contract and they suck, do the owners get their money back? do the fans get refunded the tickets?

no players = no games
NO OWNERS = NO LEAGUE!

the PA is screwed in the head - the owners (mostly corporations) will and can outlast the union. They have more money...period.

I feel sorry for the marginal players, the older statesmen and the role guys - its them who'll lose out. I almost hope they bring in replacement players - call them scabs if you want but, in a free market its all good. Besides aren't about 200 players in the PA playing in Europe? taking someone elses job?

I wouldn't say they have their heads in the clouds. I'd say somewhere darker and smellier.

No cap no hockey. Owners pay the cheques so if it's a cap they want so be it. Honestly making over 1 million a year is a bad thing??????

Remember there are only 700 jobs in the NHL and millions
of $ to go around.

Don't bring the NFL into the mix. A billion dollar TV deal is why the NFL can share 75%. The NHL has to buy airtime in the US and sell it's own advertising in order to recoup the cost.

As for making a profit, well most owners are another form of hobbyists except they spend their coin on professioal sports teams for their fun.

Not many professional sports teams make a lot of dough, yes some do well the Leafs, Yankees and Man U but they are the exception not the norm.

I'm with the owners hard cap and if at all possible no guaranteed contracts....

Roenick is a jughead

The players look pathetic-

The more Roenick talks, the funnier it seems. His last apperance on tv was a joke! Calling Betteman names? lol - classy JR.

The owners have all the time and money in the world. I hope they use replacements - the players sem to have lost touch with their "role".

Owners = employers

Players = employees.

Leaked memo today saying (surprise, surprise) the owners are turning down the offer.

The interesting part is to see what the owners' counterproposal will be. Maybe they'll let the players keep their 24% as a trade-off for a cap of some sort.

They were still meeting last I'd heard. Part of the memo indicated one thing the owners would propose is that the salary reductions should not necessarily be proportionate according to current salary, i.e. the higher paid players (who can afford it) will give back a higher percentage than the lower paid ones (because they can't afford it).

Sounds like a superb ploy by the league to divide and conquer by causing a rift in the union. Some of the lower paid players have already been saying that the NHLPA stance favours the high end players more but for the most part they've been muzzled, 'til now. I'm sure if this is on the table it will cause much heated debate among the players and at least some are bound to go public. The cracks will be forming in the union as everybody starts looking out for their own best interests.

Excellent strategy.
