Each year, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducts between 3-5 players into the hall. So, I'm curious to know, who do you guys think are for sure hall of famers playing right now?

Obviously I'd say Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. But who else? Some possible choices, though they have a long time to go before they retire:

Conor McDavid
Auston Matthews
Nathan McKinnon
Carey Price
Shea Webber
Patrice Bergeron
Brad Marchand
John Tavares
Drew Doughty
Patrick Kane
Jonathan Toews
Mitch Marner
Steve Stamkos
Nikita Kucherov
Brayden Point

Now, as I mentioned, some of these are waaaaay to early to say. Some are possibly borderline cases. Who else would you guys add to this group?

Good list but you missed Malkin.
3 cup rings
Conn Smythe
Calder
Hart
Art Ross.
If that doesn't get you in then nothing will.

If, God forbid, McDavid suffered a career ending injury today, he would not make the HoF.

The way I like to phrase the question is, "If they never played another game, which current players would make the HoF?".

I still think he would...

Oh you guarantee it do you...haha
Yup. But I'm pretty sure that we're never going to find out the answer to that hypothetical situation.

Guaranteed he would not.
I'm not so sure. Look at Cam Neely. His career was cut short (only played 730 games), but McDavid has played fewer games and scored more points. I would think if he was forced to retire, they would likely include him in the Hall.

It should also be mentioned that the Hockey Hall of Fame has some pretty borderline players in it. Baseball has serious discussions where guys with great stats are ignored. In hockey there are lists of players who were good, but not great! Like, Joe Nieuwendyk or Glenn Anderson. Great players, but HOF?

To be a “lock” for the Hall of Fame, I look at these questions the exact same way you do.

That being said if McDavid ended his career today for whatever reason (assuming it’s not a massive character issue like a crime) he is a 100% lock for the hall of fame.

2 MVPs
3 Art Ross Trophies

There are players who have gotten in largely on peak value over career value.

This would be to the extreme of the two, but he gualifies for the hall of fame consideration and his peak value is to high to fail.

So incredible that in the career wins category, the only three active goalies in the top 25 are Fleury with 494 wins 😳 good for third all time, Price with 360 wins, and Jonathan Quick with 340 wins. Fleury has more than a 130 more wins than Price, and still looks pretty damn good in net today, even in front of a crappy CHI team. We talk about Gretzky vs. Ovie, but I wonder if Fleury has enough left in the tank to catch Patrick Roy for second all-time @ 551 wins? Don't think he can catch Brodeur @ 691 unfortunately. Given they are only one year apart in age, and 20 wins difference, as Glam said, maybe Quick gets added to the list of probables...

This is a good point. One could argue Pavel Bure is a good example of this. Only played 13 seasons, but some of those seasons were spectacular.

No major issues with the list except for Brent Burns who is clearly not a lock for the Hall of Fame compared to other defencrman on the list

For parts of his early career he played forward because he was a bad defender.
He is a great offensive defence man at his peak when he jumped in to the rush all the time, but he does not have a great defensive rep.

In terms of defenceman, even with less points Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty have better cases for the hall of fame. In fact it’s not even close in my view

Start with Doughty.

- 2 Stanley cups to nil.
- While each has a Norris , Doughty has been top 3 4 times while Burns has been 3 times. Also Doughty has been top 10 in Norris voting 8 times while Burns has only been there 4 times.
- Doughty has two Olympic gold medals, Brett Burns has none. Also many Considered Doughty the best player at the 2014 olympics where he was named best D.
- Drew Doughty was named on the NHL 2010-2019 all decade first team. Brett Burns was not name to either first or second team.

Not only does Doughty have a better case as of today, he is 5 years younger.

Burns vs Keith

-Keith has 2 Norris vs one for Burns.
- 3 Cups for Keith, including a Conn Smythe
- 7 Top 10 Norris finishes vs 4.
- 2 Olympic gold medals vs none

it’s not even close

Keith is a lock compared to Burns and will get in fairly quickly after eligible. . burns may have to wait a good while.

looking at this further I am not sure what is the case for Brent Burns over Shea Weber. he does have the Norris but most else leans to Weber. but it is not clear like Doughty and Keith.

I think a player that has not been mentioned but is very likely to get in is Roman Josi.

One advantage that he had is that he is Swiss, and I don’t believe there are any Swiss players in the hall. As an International Hall of Fame that has value.

But he is also a hell of a D. One Norris, and already 7 top 10 Norris finishes (3 more than Burns).

He is probably going to need another 3 or 4 solid years to complete his resume but he is in very good shape.

I consider his chances of making the Hall very good.

He also has a hot wife.
