Mostly because the first 2 rounds were 3 out of 5 and not 4 out of 7.

Maybe I'm wrong (but I don't think so), but as far as I can remember the playoffs have always, always, always been 4 our of 7 for every round for the last 80 years, at least. No exceptions. I never recall any 3 out of 5.

As I'd posted earlier they used to play the 1st 4 games in 5 days. That is one reason they finished much earlier.

The awards need a tweak too.

Hughes just won best defense man.
But to replace the Norris you really need 2 awards.
1 can be the “Bobby Orr” award for the highlights and most points (ie… Hughes) and the other for truely best defensive defense man.

85-86 was the last season to use best of 5 for the first round of the playoffs.

The size, speed and training is bigger and better than ever. The through the legs passes, the Michigan, the high speed cycling of the puck are amazing evolutions. The international talent is flooding the league with awesome talent....and then there's Connor McDavid. People tend to romanticize the heroes of their youth, but today's game is the best ever. Still plenty of fights and physical play too, though not as much as earlier eras, when they had goons that could hardly skate.
