Igor Larionov and Cam Neely have only slightly more points than Toews and are in. He may not have the statistical success but I'd bet you there's plenty of guys who passed 1500 points that would give it up to be half as successful as Toews has been in his short career. Same with Duncan Keith
Larionov is not a valid comparison as he is in the hall at least as much for his international career as his NHL.

Cam Neely had 400 goals and 700 points. I still think Toews needs a couple of more years.

shack I think you are underrating Pavel Datsyuk. He's definitely higher than borderline. I would at LEAST put him in the same category with Hossa and Elias. Here's why

1. He has a higher PPG than either Hossa or Elias
2. He has won 8 individual awards - 4 Lady Byng, 3 Selke and 1 Plus Minus Award
3. He is a better 2 way player than both Hossa & Elias

He gets my vote if it had to be made today. And I hate the Red Wings!

Did not remember he had so many awards.

Drew Doughty, Kane and Teows. I know it's too early but McDavid and he needs to get out of Edmonton.

No one brought up Evengi Malkin? He has Scoring titles, Stanley Cups, I believe rookie of the year, and an MVP(or some close seconds).

Think he qualifies.

To even mention McDavid means you did not read or do not understand the question.

Not guys who you think will make it but guys who would make it if they stopped playing today. Doughty hasn't even played 8 years and though he's excellent, he would not qualify based on his stats.

With the numbers Jagr is accumulating, it made me think:

Which current NHL'ers, IF THEIR CAREERS WERE TO END TODAY, have had great enough careers that they'd make the HOF? Not talking about guys like Stamkos, Karlsson, Toews etc. who are on their way, but have not done it long enough yet.

IM(as always)HO:

Absolute mortal locks:
Jagr
Iginla

Regular mortal locks:
Chara
Thornton

It would be hard to keep them out:
Crosby
Ovie
Luongo

Worth consideration:
Elias
Hossa

Borderline:
Datsyuk
Marleau

Just missed (and too old to do much more): Doan

That's my list of guys who'd currently qualify. There are lots of guys well on their way but need to post good numbers for several more years.

I like this topic.
I wish, and I know I sometimes jump the gun, we could have a nice calm discussion once.
Everyone just post who they think should be in and then compare notes.
Someone may surprise with information about a player that others do not have.

I will comment on Shack's list then maybe add one or two of my own.

Absolute mortal locks:
Jagr ... Yes
Iginla ... Yes

Regular mortal locks:
Chara ... Not so sure, but would not argue much.
Thornton ... Not in my HOF.

It would be hard to keep them out:
Crosby ... Yes, definitely, especially after a few more seasons.
Ovie ... Getting there, needs a few more seasons.
Luongo ... No, not in my HOF.

Worth consideration:
Elias ... Not so sure. Would plea to take closer look at his numbers.
Hossa ... Along same line as Elias.

Borderline:
Datsyuk ... Is almost a lock to get into my HOF.
Marleau ... Not a lock, but in the discussion.

As others have said I see Doughty as well on his way, even now after only eight seasons. In my opinion the Kings do not win the Cup with out him.
Teows and Malkin would rank, in my list, somewhere close to Datsyuk.

This is the kind of response I was hoping for. Thanks Craig.

My retort.

If you say Crosby and Ovie need a few more seasons, then you are saying no, they do not belong. I agree they haven't had very long careers but they've been the 2 most dominant of their era. Ovie has been the dominant goal scorer in this era of 2-1 games for quite some time. Same with Sid although his dominance is more diversified and he has a stellar international record along with being NHL MVP several times. I'd say they get in today.

Thornton. He may have not played up to some peoples' expectations but, by god he has over 1300 points and still going strong. Impossible to exclude him. Datsyuk (supremely talented) is barely over 900. I see a disconnect there in your choices that Datsyuk is a lock but Joe doesn't make it. Thornton has almost 50% more points.

As for Doughty, Weber belongs in the same discussion.

Luongo has 430 wins. How many goalies have more? How many goalies with more are not in? International career as well.

Hossa/Elias. Very comparable. Both over 1,200 games and both over 1,000 points. Both have multiple cups. Very admirable careers.

Marleau. Surprising stats. 1,400 games, almost 500 goals, over 1,00 points. Not too shabby.

I may be going a bit off topic but I can see Doughty & Weber getting in at the end of their careers, debatable if they stopped now.
I can see Corey Perry getting in (again, maybe not yet, but by career conclusion). As well as Rick Nash (if dominant for another 4-6 yrs).

Based on McDavid's ppg stats alone should get him HHOF noms. LOL!

Ovie is lock for the HHOF because scoring 500 career goals in this era is hard to do. Not many hockey players will score 500 goals in the NHL. In the new era, if a player can score 400 goals is consideration for the hall. Hossa is 3 goals away from 500 and he is asked to play a more defensive role, consider him for the hall.
