in question period 2 weeks ago he said a bill is not needed. why the flip flop?
What is the reference for that? That sounds odd because a bill would be needed to introduce legislation....

He is a politician - if a vocal minority complains - he will switch from whats right to what gets him elected.

typical Government logic....
Instead of doing the right thing and going after the human Traffickers...let's make it so the industry has to go even further underground..so its MORE dangerous for the ladies!
I wonder what the Hotelliers Assoc. feels about this whole ...Making the clients the Criminals thing.....
Think about it...at any given time...how many rooms are booked by Escorts in the GTA..?? no clients means no work...no work means no need to book rooms....no booked rooms means lower revenue!

although it would be easier to police the hotels than private residences.....but again if thats the case..up goes the danger quotient with ladies having to use alternate locations to work out of!
Interesting poll results too..so far 77% want Brothels legalized

Wait and see what the bill says before condemning it.
Hopefully the Canadian model is similar to the New Zealand one and nothing like the American, but my first preference is no new law at all.

Mr. Speaker, of course, it is absolutely essential that we respond to the Supreme Court's ruling on prostitution.

The member had many good ideas for addressing the issue, for example with programs. We do not need a bill to provide a comprehensive response to the Supreme Court ruling. Programs are also needed to help the most vulnerable people who are affected by this issue.

I find it encouraging that in at least two Toronto Sun articles where they included a poll asking readers if brothels should be legalized, the results have been overwhelmingly in favour of legalization. ~80% in one, and currently 77% in this one. Will government take the hint?

The Tories will ban it as much as possible. They need to find a way to win womens votes and women as a whole are easily manipulated. They don't realize protection has been used as an excuse to repress women throughout history. So this bill will protect women from men by penalizing men, it will be the Nordic model with a Canadian twist, you can't expect a potato farmer to come up with anything more creative. Women are almost universally against prostitution.

Thanks. I think he was responding to Mourani's question about a support programs (the second part of her compound question). He's saying we don't need a bill (new law) for a comprehensive response including support programs.

If they were concerned with women's votes, they wouldn't dismantle our social fabric. Women know the score, it's men who have been manipulated.

I was pretty happy with what Mackay had to say. He suggests that it will be a make in Canada solution, that he aims to protect the vulnerable, that he wants to get this thing going this spring. So: not necessarily the Nordic model, good on him for protecting the truly vulnerable, and let's see what he has in mind so people can have a say. It will take a while to go through the processes, get passed, get royal ascent, etc, so if he spells it out soon there will be time for people to speak up.

I don't much like the present government but I don't think they are going to go all social conservative over this as it isn't a winner for them - look at ALL the polls and response posts to stories on this issue - overwhelmingly supportive of a solution that doesn't make the situation worse, and often suggesting some sort of legalization as the better way forward. Even the police are divided, and they surely represent the most serious threat to the hobby. Of course the religious right and the nutty feminists (as distinct from the reasonable ones) are all for hanging johns, but they want to hang abortionists too, even more than us, and they haven't got any traction with Harper.

They MIGHT go draconian, but they might also go all fudgy - re-enforce human trafficking laws, set up outreach for prostitutes who want to get out, stuff like that - in other words, stuff to make them look like they are doing something without actually doing anything. They have bigger problems than this, and to make another stand that shows them as insensitive law and order douchebags might not seem to them to be a great idea.

Someone above posted that they have "lost respect" for anyone not shouting from the watchtowers... what do you want? we don't know what they have in mind, most of us have participated in the request for comments, polls seem to show support for some sort of legalization... it's as if you think this issue is the most important thing there is in most people's lives. Most people don't really care as long as their kids aren't picking up and sucking on used condoms they find in the street.

And what "groups" do you mean anyway? Hobbyist groups? Are there any? Organizations supporting sex workers have certainly been speaking out, and also some social scientists. It's a big deal for YOU particularly because you are in the business, and I don't see any organized outreach from the agencies... maybe work on that instead of "loosing respect" for the people who pay for your services.

I don't know, to me it sounds like trying to justify the Nordic model. If that's not his aim, then good on him for actually doing the right thing. It's just too hard to tell at this point if he's really out to protect the vulnerable, or if it's a combination of that and a witch hunt for those who partake in the hobby.

When he describes Spousal Immunity as "antiquated" I'm less optimistic than I once was.

Damn, flying to the Antipodes is expensive.

I have a stupid question. If brothels are legalized, would that make it more expensive to hobby?
there will still be independent SPs.
