But may I suggest you look into getting health insurence for it. Vet bills add up quickly enough, with out the added whammy of illness. Be sure to read it over and over so you're sure what is and isn't covered under it. (An associate had to have her dog put down because the insurer denied the cancer meds and she couldn't afford them outright)
I know, my son has an old cat that has spent weeks at the hospital.

I am reminded about the SNL joke:

"you can now get a hip replacement done on a cat for $5,000"

"And you can get a whole cat replacement for $10"

Kittens and cats remind me of extremely high maintenance "hottie" who should be avoided at all cost.
Really??? That's surprising because cats are very self sufficient. Make sure they have clean water and food and clean the litter box every couple days (or let them outside when the need arises if they are indoor/ outdoor cats) and they are pretty much good to go.

Our 2 cats play with the kids all the time or amuse themselves chasing, well, pretty much anything! LOL As I said earlier, Max follows me around the house because he's a "people cat" and feels the need to be in the same room, but he rarely bothers me, unless he wants a belly rub! :D

Pet insurance is a must for all pet owners. I know that many complain, paying around $20/month, but if it ever happens that your pet needs some serious work done, you are looking at paying out thousands.

I have 3 pets, all covered under a family plan. I have had 2 major issues with my one dog. A broken leg once, and all his teeth removed the second time. It would have cost me about 7K for both. {5k for the leg & 2K for the teeth}

Pet insurance saved my bank account. :D

Congrats! And many happy/funny memories to come.

I have 3 cats, the newest addition being only 3 months old. My oldest loves to play with ice cubes...kitty hockey I like to call it. She's a true Canadian, eh. All of mine are rescues as well. They are part of the family to me.

SR,

Obviously you're going to vets that are in it for the money.... Some vets I know only charge 300 to remove all the teeth, several friend's pets have had broken legs and none have cost more than 500.....
No, I am going to vets that do more then then just the basics. I take no chances with my pets. Which is why having pet insurance may give me these options at better care.

For example: my dog was not casted to have the leg fixed, but plated and pinned. Had to be done by an orthopedic surgeon. Being a toy breed and knowing he may always have issues with his legs, I was not taking any chances.

So Hooray! for pet insurance, because I may have had to go the cheap route.

SR 2 legs were operated on, pins inserted. Total cost under $500 again, some vets are in it for the money.

I had to take a dog to an emergency vet once, total cost for overnite care $1200. Regular vet was disgusted at what I had to fork out for less than $100 of medicine.

It's not about "cheap" care, its about vets that are in it for real love of the animals. These vets are a rare breed but they seem to have a very satisfying life and very loyal clientel.
I like my vets and I am fine with the charges. I don't think they are in it for the money. Some are, I understand, but I don't agree that mine are. Of course money plays a part. Just like this business. There are many top providers who charge different rates. Some just for the money, some because they love their work. The price tag doesn't always say which one is which.

My emergency clinic does have some higher rates but never more then about $300.00 - So I agree, you got ripped off there. But I don't think my vets are money hungry people who don't care about my animals.

I just can't see an operation being less then $500 for a public client. Time, medication, equipment alone would be more then $500. That is just my opinion. Maybe your friend knew the vet, got a deal, or something, but that is extremely low for an operation of that kind.

However, that is great for your friend and your friends' pet. I don't think I could even risk it at such cheap rate personally. I just would not feel comfortable. That is just me though. Maybe I am just like one of those idiots who think CT is better for auto repair then a run-down shop. Either way, I can live with my choices.
