Now Toronto!!
I heard from a good source that Nascar is trying to come to Canada..and have already purchased land..... I'm not a fan.. I've never actually watched a race.. but it sounds like it would be good for the economy... any thoughts??

NASCAR is a large entity.

NASCAR's Canadian operation is the old CASCAR series for the most part. They run at tracks like Mosport, Delaware, Cayuga, etc.

NASCAR's Nationwide series (formally the Busch series) ran at Montreal last year and will again this year. It was originally a minor league or feeder system to the big show but there is a lot of cross-over from Cup drivers to Nationwide.

NASCAR's Spring Cup (formally Nextel Cup, formally Winston Cup) is the big show.

NASCAR also runs a Truck series on the national level.

Then there are the various NASCAR regional series.

So, saying NASCAR is coming to Canada is a broad statement. I don't think you will see a Cup race in Canada for a while. IMHO

won't work up here. we don't have the local support race track that they have in the states. in southern states a small local tracks with good support, paying fans, are large enough that small time weekend drivers can actually make a living at driving. that does not happen in canada and the northern states.the big southern tracks get 2 nascar races a year plus they get other series coming to these tracks as well. so unless you get a commitment from indy race , cart, the truck series, and bike racing i don't see it making money. on the other hand lets get the government to support it and build the 100,000 seat venue then sell it to somebody for 10 cents on the dollar like we did with the sky dome. love nascar racing but i would rather go to daytona and see it done right.

my 2 cents

There has been talk of a Cup race at Calgary International Speedway - the track is big enough; and more importantly, so are the facilities to handle the fans (Need 50k+ for the economics to work, and 150k+ are normal for a US race)

I would love to see a race in Canada; having been to several US races. The Mexico City 'experiment' seemed to work out pretty well for them, as did the Busch race in Montreal - so there is hope, but it would be for publicity more then anything else...

I used to race Saturday night specials here in Canada (Barrie area) - the grass roots support just isn't here the same way it is in the Southern States... Too much winter, not enough time to go fast and turn left...

What is so exciting watching a bunch of 'bubbas' turning left a bunch of times, albeit at 200 miles an hour. Don't get me wrong, I like F1, rallying and LeMans but stock car racing leaves me numb.
I am not a big Nascar fan, but I'd go see a Nascar race in Michigan any day over an F1 race. The reason is unless you have good (mega expensive) seats at F1 ie. pitstop you are basically stuck watching a bunch of cars zip by for a 16th of the track without really knowing what's happening. On top of that there is too many start to finish races without changing the front runner. Boring.

However, the F1 parties in Montreal are cool.

Nascar is like the WWE of car racing. I used to love it when I was a kid, but once I realized it was faked, I lost respect (both wrestling and Nascar). I don't see why it would not be hugely successful here, I know lots of people who go from here to the US to watch races. CFL does not succeed in Toronto because it is a minor league, people in Toronto only will accept major league. Even OHL teams do not work in Toronto, only in Guelph, London, etc. But the Leafs sell out despite everything. People said that UFC would not work in Canada, but Montreal April 19th appears on track to be the most successful UFC ever.

Are you saying nascar is fake?wtf?take a trip down south and visit the garages of the top teams and then tell me this stuff is fake. i have more respect for the nascar drivers then the f-1 drivers. this guy go at the same speed but the f-1 drivers are in a modified airplane well the nascar drivers are in a very highly modified street. Toronto is a large market town with to much competition for your entertainment dollar. The marlies don't do well here because there are other things to do but the marlies are just as fun to watch as the leafs except they actually win. the leafs are sold out every game because of corporate season ticket holders so why spend more money on the team you won't make any more money except play off ticket sales. when there is only so much to do in a town then ohl and ahl looks better just look at barrie. some small market sport do work such as lacrosse does well at the acc but only because it has a loyal fan base.

Well I find F1 even more boring than NASCAR. I always laugh when I hear all these snooty F1 fans make fun of NASCAR, like their "sport" is so much better. I don't "get" NASCAR but I don't insult people who do.

I hate to break it to you, but it is fake. I used to love it, it was painful to me to find out that it was fake when I grew up. F1 is boring because the best driver in the best car generally drives away from the field and wins. F1 drivers are the best in the world, until 10 years ago, Nascar drivers were the best drivers in the Southern US, no comparison. Nascar is becoming more international now as the money gets bigger.

Anyway, back to faking. It is not neccessarily fake to the extent that they predecide who wins, but it gets close. Among the things they do:
- If a driver has too big a lead late in a race, they create a yellow flag to bring him back to the pack, and negate the work he did to build the lead. They don't have to do it that way, but they like the "drama" of door-to-door racing, and they figure (rightly, it seems), that the fans will not feel that they are being manipulated.
- The specifications for the car bodies are different for each manufacturer, and they adjust them to control who wins. If the Fords are doing too well, they might decide to remove an inch on one of the spoilers, so the car has less down-force. F1 has done things like this, such as banning turbos because some manufacturers were better at them. But not nearly as blatant as the tinkering that they do in Nascar. It is very hard to justify having different rules for different teams, but they do.
