There is a difference between destiny and fate.
Destiny can be seized, altered and changed, while fate is locked in and unalterable. So, basically the 2nd part of that quote is erroneous as it is "fate", not "destiny" that chooses us.
Destiny and fate are Important dynamics of "story telling" since the dawn of communication and an important dynamic of what not only makes movies memorable, but what also makes heroes, legends and stories live forever in our hearts and minds.
Movies are, "let me tell you this story".
