Firefighters are #1 by far, the most prestigious. I agree that what they do is good, and especially after 9/11 they came out as heroes, but I personally don't think they should be at the top.

For me, it would be scientists, doctors, nurses, engineers, and teachers.

Real estate agents were at the bottom of the list, with about 5%.

What are your thoughts?
Doctors? Give me a break! It seems that some of them are on a power trip these days!

'Prestige' is different from 'likeliness to get you laid.'

Prestige - reputation or influence arising from success, achievement, rank, or other favorable attributes.

So if the metric for determining success is that firefighters always put out the fire, they could be considered prestigious. But that may not be accurate, as there are wildfires that spread out of control.

It seems from the definition of prestige, there is an implication of reliability. Someone who is known for ALWAYS achieving their objective.

So what is a job with a 100% success rate? Hard to say, but toll booth collector comes close.

I find nothing prestigious in what many teachers do, because most of them don't put in an effort and have a woe is me attitude when they put in a little extra effort.

I think the round the clock tireless and heroic work done by our service providers is the most cherished and prestigious out there.

Well done, ladies! :)

In the real world most people give respect to those that are educated. People seem enamored with Doctors so that would be at the top of my list. Second would be an attorney followed by CEO of a major company. Sports figures also get a lot of the "wow" factor but unfortunately sports figures are professionaly short lived.

Bottom line - if you want respect, get a good education with a masers degree. In the alternative, marry a rich person!:)

As a collector of degrees, I don't think the paper necessarily warrants respect.
Are many people doing jobs that have little by way of accolades and only received a piece of paper saying how much they earned..(cheque).

If you make a positive difference in the world, you should receive respect.

I agree paper does not warrant respect and those that make a positive difference in the world deserve respect. IMHO, I think those that have a higher education get to first base faster than those that don't. Also job title seems to be attractive to most in the respect arena.

I am fortunate to be a collector also and when I am introduced to people they tend to automatically give me respect without even knowing me based upon my educational background and position. I am one to argue why give someone like me respect without even getting to know the person first? I think it is anaologous to someone that drives a nice car. The perception is that person is rich when in reality he/she could be swimming in debt whereas the person driving around in a junker could be a great person, noble and be debt free.

Our society is about perception and I argue people, right or wrong, perceive professionals such as doctors, attorney's as respected intelligent people. Most probably are but some, just like in any job, are idiots who hide under their title.

I have a friend who is a firefighter. It a pretty good career (unless you have to fight an actual fire). He works 72 hours straight (sleeps at the fire station) or 3 days. Then the rest of the week is his own free time. This allows him to develop a second home based career. Also, firefighters can retire at age 50 with a great pension.

Since parenting is not on the list, I would say that medical doctors would be at the top (nothing is more important than your health).
