Actually they're working on that with experimental driverless trucks and cars, and you can expect to be banned from doing it yourself any day now. You might want to look at the thread on the topic here in this very Lounge.

Can’t we just harden buses?

There are tons of unemployed veterans that could easily stop buses from being the soft targets they clearly are.

Oh wait. We’re talking about kids killed in a bus crash in Canada. Not kids and teachers who were murdered by a weapon of war carried by a 2nd Amendment havin’ adult in a school.

A total tragedy here. Despite what was hopefully a drunk post from hammermill at 8am (just because you sound like Yoda doesn’t make you profound like him), hopefully there’s something to be gained from this tragedy in-terms of future road safety initiatives.

Humbolt is a pretty sleepy place, and I remember watching more than one Bronco’s game when I was in the area about 15 years ago. This must be devastating.

The bus was T boned.

The implication is that either the bus or the truck missed a stop sign or made an improper turn.

Terrible tragedy.

The truck company will be closed and investigated as all trucks will be inspected and all their safety records as well as log books. One problem is industry is pushing drivers to exceed log book rules and hiring bad drivers and drivers have to push themselves as they are paid per mile . The industry is quite challenging to make a profit as rates are so low . I have never understood why as there are not enough trucks to haul all the freight yet rates do not rise. Way to many middlemen grabbing the money and none left to make a profit to the truck so you have to push the truck. As the Canadian dollar slips the price of trucks has risen dramatically but no commiserate rise in rates . Truck must have been going way to fast. Speed kills

Also, could have the bus driver prevented it by carefully looking for a bad driver about to blow the intersection? If so, bus driver is partially at fault , believe it or not . Most people who have been t-boned could have prevented it by looking for drivers blowing the intersection

The safety record of trucks is quite good as accidents per mile is far less than cars but when one does occur it is spectacular, as in this case

Why punish legal drivers? That would be the argument most commonly used.

But as others have pointed out lots of innovations are being made to make trucks safer. If laws are followed truck driverd should be well rested. In other words truck manufacturs, users and law makers have all made improvements. Not to mention there are laws that track the sales of trucks and to have legal plates you need a licence.

Although, as with any difficult problem, more could be done. Effective enforcement of hours-of-work limitations on commercial driving would lkely be the most effective, but also the most difficult.

It sorta runs parallel to the difficulty of effectively keeping legal, useful guns out of the hands of 'irresponsible' users. And in both situations, the 'bad apples' effectively do what the old saying warns us they will.
