The four AL teams are set, just waiting on match ups/positioning.
Three teams battling for two spots for the NL post season.


In the AL New York, Tampa, Minnesota and Texas have made the playoffs.
Minnesota will host the WC team, while Texas will start at the AL East Champ.
New York's magic number is three. Any NY wins and/or Tampa losses totalling three gives NY the AL East. For Tampa the magic number is four.

In the NL Philadelphia and Cincinnati are locks, while San Francisco, Atlanta and San Diego battle it out for the final two spots. One thing is for sure, California will have at least one team in the postseason. San Francisco's magic number is one. Atlanta's is two over SD and three over SF for the WC.
San Fran is hosting San Diego in this final weekend and SD is in a must win at least one situation and hope that Philly sweeps Atlanta to force a one game SD vs Atlanta playoff game.
If San Diego sweeps SF and Atlanta wins at least one of the remaining two, then SD will play SF in a one game playoff for the NL West.
Not complicated enough yet ?
If San Diego sweeps San Fran and Atlanta wins only one, all three teams will be 91-71 forcing a three way playoff. If that should happen then SD would host SF in a one game playoff for the NL West, the loser would then face Atlanta in a one gamer for the NL WC.

Why not just wait and see ? That will be so much easier.;)

Well it comes down to the final day. Four games which will influence the final standings, two will settle the AL, two may settle the NL.

In the AL the two games of interest, Yankees play the Red Sox at Fenway and the Rays visit the Royals.
Yanks send Moseley(4-3) against Lackey(13-11) for the Sox. In the other AL game the Rays start Davis(12-10) while the Royals have O'Sullivan(4-6) take the mound.
With the Yankees and Rays tie atop the AL East obviously if one wins and the other loses, the winner takes the division and the loser gets the wild card.
Should the Yankees and Rays both win or lose, then the two teams finish tied and Tampa wins the tie breaker based on winning the season series.

In the NL it is a bit more complicated. San Diego and Atlanta are tied for the wild card and once again if one wins and the other loses ... well it is not as simple as that.
The Padres are also one game behind San Francisco for the West Division crown, so a win completes the sweep and puts SD and SF in a tie for the West.
Atlanta host the Phillies one more time. Philly has Hamel(12-11) on the mound while Atlanta sends Hudson(16-9). San Diego starts Latos(14-9) vs San Fran's Sanchez(12-9).


Sunday Oct 3, last day of regular season ... maybe.
So what happens if ...
1) Atlanta wins and San Diego wins. San Fran, San Diego and Atlanta would all finish with 91 wins.
SF and SD would play one game(Monday) to determine the NL West winner, the loser would then play Atlanta(Tuesday) for the wild card.
2) San Fran wins and Atlanta loses. Atlanta and San Diego would be tied for the wild card and would play tomorrow, winner gets Philly, loser goes home for the winter.
3) San Diego wins and Atlanta loses. The easiest of the three. Atlanta is out, SD wins the West and SF is the WC. SD won the season series over SF. No extra game is needed.

You are welcome and no problem. The original post took a lot longer, I was just going to post a simple question 'what do you think will happen ?' but I got carried away. I decided to follow it up today.

I'll predict Phillies and Rangers in World Series and Phillies to win it all.

Or the Rays and the Twins.
It's hard to like anybody in the American League this year because they all appear weak in starting pitching by playoff standards.

For first round I'd go with Phillies , Giants, Rangers, Yankees.
In the second round I like Phils over Giants and Rangers over Yankees.
In World Series I like Phillies over Rangers.
Odds of picking all seven series right from start is 1/128 all things being equal. ( 1/2 to the power of seven is equal to 1/128.)

American League is tough to pick this year. All teams involved can be had and to my eyes Texas is best of a bad lot; but, if Cliff Lee doesn't win his games they are dead meat.

My prediction for the MLB playoffs;
Yankees in four.
Tampa in three.
Philly in three.
San Fran in four.

Yankees over Rays in six.
Philly over SF in five.

Philly wins WS in six.

Already umpiring issues and we are only 1 inning into the playoffs. Lets hope the umpiring this year is better than last years playoffs.

Bad call by Welke on that 2-1 pitch to Pena with the bases loaded and 1 out. Clearly a ball, but it was ruled a foul tip. Instead of Pena behing ahead in the count 3-1, it was even 2-2. Pena ends up striking out and then Baldelli strikes out and Lee gets out of the jam.

Doc throwing a no-hitter through 7 in Philly and no one close to hitting off him. Absolutely dominant.
