All residents of Mississauga condo to be tested after confirmed cases of B.1.351 variant

TORONTO -- All residents of a condominium in central Mississauga will be tested for COVID-19 on Monday after five cases of the coronavirus variant that originated in South Africa have been confirmed at that location.

Peel Public Health said widespread testing will be conducted to help stop the spread of the contagious variant known as B.1.351.

"We are taking this urgent step now while community spread of this variant is still low," a spokesperson for Peel Public Health said in a statement.

Testing will be conducted floor by floor from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can also go to a testing centre in the community. The health unit declined to name the condominium "because it is an active investigation."

"As we begin to see variants of concern spread within the community, we are at a critical point in the pandemic response as these variants have the ability erase the progress we have made as a community," Dr. Lawrence Loh, the medical officer of health in Peel Region, said in a statement.

"It is imperative that residents continue to follow the guidelines of Public Health and limit interactions with others so that we can stop the spread."

Peel Public Health reported the first known case of the B.1.351 variant in the province earlier this month. It was detected in a Mississauga man who, officials said, likely acquired the infection in the community.

Peel Region also has 30 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant that first emerged in the United Kingdom.

The condo hasn't been identified...hope this isn't the one we all know next to Square One.

This is the kind of decisive action that was not taken a year ago to track and trace. I'm not blaming anyone in particular as I believe that it was a new phenomenon at that time and we did not really know what we were dealing with.

Gotta learn from our mistakes.

This CTV News story is misinformation. Under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (section 7) Canadian citizens have the right to control their own bodily integrity which includes the state imposing unwanted medical treatment.

These are 2 different things. Rights and Freedoms are one thing, misinformation is another. It is reporting false facts. Alternative facts. Just curious what about the news story is inaccurate? Is testing not being done? Something else that they got wrong? Just looking for clarification.

Rights and freedoms are yours right up until they infringe on others. Nothing wrong with taking precautions for the health and well being of other residents and/or greater community. Testing is painless and not doing so would be irresponsible.

Sure.
The journalist intentionally used a sensationalistic headline as clickbait. All residents will be tested is a false statement. City of Mississauga health officials aren't going to be testing all residents of the building. It will be offered to all residences of the building -big difference.

I was going by the title posted.

In the meantime, it might end up being true if all residents agree. Not likely, but still possible.

And what difference does it make to the relevance of the story about the city trying to track and trace this new strain. It benefits all of us to understand the virus' spread regardless of having a Q-tip shoved up your nose? Wouldn't you like to see the virus contained?

Please remove yourself from the country if you feel that way!
i don't take orders from you.

there was no lockdowns and no mask mandates in 2018 when hospitals were flooded with flu patients

the flu is more deadly especially to children and schools did not close during past flu seasons.

Residents of a Mississauga condominium are being tested for COVID-19 today after five cases of the coronavirus variant that originated in South Africa were discovered.

Peel Region Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh says that the widespread, voluntary testing of residents in the building is being done “out of an abundance of caution” due to concerns about the potential rapid spread of the variant.

Why such a stupid debate above gents, testing at the condo is voluntary.

FAKE AND FALSE INFORMATION

AS USUAL

I hope they force test everyone. It's probably the maskless jackasses that walk around the lobby and get in the elevators causing the issues.

I was pointing out that when the journalist in the article above frames his story with words such as "all residences", "will be", "we are", "testing will be conducted floor by floor", implies that the tenants have no choice when words such as voluntary, offered, or encouraged to would-which of they do.

I'm not sure where the first two sentences of your post are from but they're not from the article above.

From what I’ve read the buildings management has done a poor job of getting residents to follow proper COVID precautions.

That is because they are dealing with moronic dumbasses who refuse to wear masks in the elevators and the lobby.

Besides taping up a shit load of masks required and distancing signs in all the common areas I'm not sure what other due diligence would be expected from property management.
