There is nothing abnormal or Veblen about this because it is a very subjective thing. A woman may put a different value on her services depending on her looks, sophistication, techniques, unique fantasy experience, location etc. The market will determine if her pricing is in line with what she is offering. Some guys aren't satisfied unless the feel like they are getting a deal, other men will drop $1,500. without thinking and will return if they feel the encounter is worth it. Your 'Veblen Effect' analogy implies that consumers are dumb and will blindly pay for 'prestige'. Who would they be impressing in a discrete encounter?Veblen Effect Definition: Abnormal market behavior where consumers purchase the higher-priced goods whereas similar low-priced (but not identical) substitutes are available. It is caused either by the belief that higher price means higher quality, or by the desire for conspicuous consumption (to be seen as buying an expensive, prestige item). Named after its discoverer, the US social-critic Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929).
