Miller and folks got a 2.5% raise in January 2008 so why not the employees.
This morning news, union worksers are asking for 3% like police and fire fighters, and TTC, if this was to go to arbitration they'd get 3% no problem.
so a 3% increase or there abouts is on its way.
At a 0% inflation rate what wage change do workers deserve buckwheat ?

well inflation is running right now at about 1.75% according to the lastest news so I'd give them 1.5% - 2%. However saying that counsellers got like 2.25 or 2.5% and that generally sets a pattern in bargining so we'll just have to wait and see.

I hate to say this.
But I agree with the freeze.
Considering, whenever I have to deal with the "City employee(s)" -- they are lazy, unintelligent, complacent, ignorant, and rude.

You get better service at a McDonalds!
(That's the sad part)
Most are that way, but have you seen who they hire as employee's. Most of the staff at TTC are hired since they are new to Canada employees, they have preferance over Canadian citizens. That's the way it has been and the way it will always be as long as the politicians run the show there.

The simpliest way to fix the shortfall of the city of Toronto is to make it so that where you work you pay your tax dollars to. If you live in Barrie and commute to Toronto everyday then a larger portion of your taxes goes to Toronto instead of where you reside. That would fix the shortfall in a hurry!

Or put a toll on entering the city for work or business or anything else. I would say that this is coming very soon.

Civil servents are overpaid, just look at the pay-scales. in the real world there are no pentions or job security which are huge benefits to employees. This should be taken into account when wages are determined. You can see how out of wack things are today, the model does not work and the house of cards is crumbling all around us - yet public employees and (sacred cow) autoworkers can't see the forest for the trees. We have a provincial government tha sets the employment standards act which it hen outright ignores as the basis for it's own employees.

Look at the direct relationship between labour costs and tax increases. unions have long since serverd their purpose. we need smaller accountable government with full transparancy. It's a trillion dollar problem that no one is willing to address. You just can't keep paying unskilled labour $70+/Hour to build cars, you can't pay someone who has swept the street for 20 years $60,000 IT DOES NOT WORK!

Now as for pensions the CAW auto worker paid nothing into there palns. The public service worker does pay into their plan it's call OMERS. Most pension plans require employees to pay into them. I'd say become a street sweeper!!! NOT all public servants are over paid it's teh same way in the private sector some are some arn't.

The main problem with the TTC is that the drivers union Local 113 has the city by the balls. They negotiate the pay raises for the drivers, collectors, and the maintenance staff at the TTC. You have collectors making $28 an hour for selling and collecting fares etc....then you have tradesmen making about $3-$5 an hour less than on the outside. It is not all roses there.

many of the people collecting money in the booths are what we call under the duty to accomadate they may have been injured or something along those lines. They may have been a driver when someone jumped one doesn't know otheres just like that part of the job.As for what outside workers are making don't know the answer to that.

Im sure that you wont find someone working at a dollar store making the wages that the collectors are making. They should be ashamed.

The overpaid workers in the private sector work at unionized shops, which has recently resulted in the bankrupting of several of those employers.

I wonder if the employees at AIG, Merrel Lynch, and Citigroup are unionized? I get a kick out of you guys who are jealous because someone makes more money than you.

I doubt there are any unionized workers that make anywhere near what I make. It's not jealousy. It's resentment over the size of the tax bill I pay, when I can see that money is being pissed away on some overpriced union gas bags.

A bank teller makes around $12-15 per hour why should a TTC collector be paid more? In my opinion a bank teller has more responsibilities, more training, and more skill.

Also why wouldn't you compare a TTC collector to a convenience store clerk? Both sell tokens...

colloctors are also licienced to drive buses/streetcars and subways. If you live in Toronto your taxes aren't that hi compared to others in the province
so stop your shinning. I have a $280000 house out of the city of course and I pay $3900 a year and also pay a $2.00 a bag for garbage pickup. House size is 1700 sq feet.

bank tellers are under paid maybe they should become unionized and earn a fair working wage but then you'd complain your ATM fees are too high.

I'm not jealous, I make good money for a private company that appreciates my skill-set and I am a well utilized professional. I pay taxes so that union shops can over-pay their collective and grant benefits and pensions (matched or un-matched) for labour. I see wage freezes/concessions in the private sector and continual wage increases in the public sector regradless of the tax implications and economic conditions. I see services being cut and taxes going up. The formula does not work and it can not continue.
