Where did you hear that ? Elected officials do not get severance if they a) get voted out or b) resign. They may get pensions based on how long they have served.

No banked sick days :D

They're all entitled to this package, depending on their years of service.

Why, I have no idea. :(

This was reported this morning on CITY TV breakfast television. When a counseller quits or loses an election they get 1 months pay for each year served so if one person serves 3 terms they'd get 1 years wages in Toronto. A term now I believe is 4 years.

TRAIN!!! it would be better if her had sick days as one can only cash in on 6 months worth of salary not ONE years worth as the mayor is going to take with him. In this case sick days would win.

That is outrageous but typical of this crew. This is on top of some kind of pension or is that it ?

Miller was a city counsellor before becoming mayor, so the numbers of his retirement package make sense.

Don't be jealous because public workers get better benefits than most of us. Complaining about it won't change things.

All government elected officials have great pensions, not just municipal politicians. I didn't hear about a severance package for Miller, why is it called severance, he didn't get fired, he is finishing his term. Is this some kind of bonus for finishing his term? Nothing surprises me anymore, it's not just Miller, it's every friggin politician who get this.

not overly surprising that the " severance" was something that htey voted themselves in order to ease the transition back to the private sector.

It is based on 1 months severance for every year served Miller will get about 133 k .

The problem I have specifically with municiple politicians is that you REALLY HAVE TO SCREW THE POOCH to lose an election after you have been in for a term. Basically if they vote you out you have been fired for cause by the board of directors and whith the exception of people on the public tit who gets sverance for getting fired for cause?

Well not complaining won't either. If there is no ongoing pension then I'm ok with the amount given the number of years but a severence plus a pension ? I would consider that a double-dip.

The only way we can ever hope to fix this is if we do something decent about everybody's severence and pension. As thing's are now, these guys can rightly claim they gave the best years of their working lives and deserve some help starting a new career. But so can anyone newly laid off/let go. What makes them stand out is that they got to design their own soft landing.

Of course, as citzens we could be hardnosed and insist everyone gets the same hard knocks, and if there's no severance/pension at WalMart, there's anone at City Hall. But we don't because we know that no severance/pension at all is as bad as too cushy a package.

The obvious answer is to get off our duffs and not tolerate legislators that don't do as well for everyone as they do for themselves. And having done that, they should have no problem with taking just the standard package everyone gets.

As a starter: defeated MPs, MPPs Councillors etc. should get EI, and only EI.

If you were the CEO of a company with as many employees and size of business of the city of Toronto...believe me you would get a hell of a lot more than Miller is getting after the time he has been on council, and as mayor.

My bet is that he will get a hell of a lot more after just sitting on boards.

You have to look at the whole package...salary plus severance plus pension...and what politicians get is peanuts compared to people in similar positions in the private sector - in positions of similar responsibility.

So...if you want people with absolutely no ability to run things...just lower the overall compensation for politics a bit more. Then you will get no one except the losers to run. Its almost that way now I think. Regular federal and provincial politicians make less than most plumbers as it is now. So for those that left real jobs with real pay to run for politics, and real public service, the least we can do is give them a decent pension. BTW...I'm not a politician, furtherst thing from it. But I do believe that if we don't pay our politicians decently we will continue to get worse and worse as a country.

I think Miller is a useless git, but I won't begrudge him his severance.

As Mayor, his salary is around 165 a year. That's peanuts for a job like that frankly. Bill Blair (Chief of Police) is around $260k. The Mayor should be making as much as the Chief of Police.

If you want good people in the job, you need to pay them better than that IMHO.

Agree with you 100%.

I'm not a politician either (obviously), but they need a serious raise. Same goes for the Councillors - though I think there should be less of them in this city.
