Mattress Question

I just bought one from Sleep Country and the saleslady was super helpful and knowledgeable. She had me try out about 5 different mattresses in the price range I was looking for and explained pretty much the same thing as KBear: when lying on your back and relaxed, you shouldn't be able to fit your hand under your lower back, or (using someone else's hand) under the backs of your knees. If you can, then that mattress isn't good for you as gravity will be trying to push your back and knees straight all night (assuming you sleep on your back of course).

Bottom line, the $1000 mattress set I just bought is about 1000% better than the $500 set I bought 5 years ago.

Can't just go by price or name, you gotta try out the mattress for yourself to make sure it suits your particular body style and comfort level.

Just want to add that the above tests should be done if you sleep on your side, and or face down.

Here is my serious story about buying a mattress. It was from Sears. The salesman was very helpful but somehow he figured out why I was buying it. (note to self...do not demonstrate the use in front of salesperson..LOL)
He gave me all sorts of discounts..bottom line though it was firm and comfortable to lie on. Pillow top which gave that little extra.. Mattres buying is so personal but what I have found is that you do get what you pay for. Price does make a difference.

Ok so it was not that serious but you get my drift:D

Sleep Country will discount. Haggled the price of a mattress down $400.00, which was for my daughter, and got it delivered in Ottawa.

I have no doubt the sales staff are very knowledgable at Sleep Country, but I would think that anyone can shop and get a better price than there.

I laugh each time I hear a commercial for their "mix and match" sale. Just how many different colour mattresses and box springs are there? You mean that they can't find anything that matches? Or do you think that for every pink box spring and blue mattress they sell, they also sell a blue box spring with a pink mattress?

Funny thing is people will buy an expensive mattress to use with a $10 pillow and wonder why their sleep is uncomfortable!

Everyone's a comedian. As far as I can tell the squeaking is coming from the mattress itself, not the box spring, and definitely not the wife or the rubber doll.

Probably true, but I am willing to pay a little extra for knowledgeable assistance. If - instead of being as helpful as she was - she had said "the prices are on the mattresses, let me know which one you want" I would have continued looking for a different store to buy from.

Look at the bigger picture

We have bought two sets from Sleep Country within the past 6 years (2 different beds). Satisfied with both. Was told by a salesman at Sears 6 years ago not to worry about the regular price. They would be on sale next week. He went on to say that they routinely rotated their specials and put merchandise back to full price just often enough and long enough to satisfy the government (what a chatty cathy he was).

We settled on medium pillow tops. Spring set is firm but pillow top made it feel like we were sleeping on a cloud.

We were told that if you usually sleep on your side then you should choose a set that makes it so your spine is straight and horizontal when on your side.

Don't let price make the decision for you. A really good mattress should be good for more like 10 years. That's over 3,500 nights, well over 20,000 hours. What price do you put on a good night's sleep?? A good night's sleep has a huge impact on your overall health.

Well, as the info posted above is somewhat accurate, there IS a difference between cheap mattresses and expensive ones. You only have to lie or sleep on one to feel the difference.

The more coils IS better. believe me, I slept on one that had 50% less coils and I felt the difference....and it is major.

The cheaper mattresses' cover doesn't last. It isn't just the guts, but the covering. The better the cover, the longer the mattress' life will be.

Now I wouldn't go out and spend 4K on a mattress but if you look at one that sells for $1000.00 with box spring, and look at one for $400 with b/s you WILL feel a difference. But remember: you have to compare apples to apples. Don't lie on a firm cheap mattress and a soft expensive one. There will be a big difference.

Now I purchased a mismatched set a few years ago and saved about 50%. I wish I had the money for a pillow top because they are heaven. (I bought an obus forme pad from CTC for $100.00 and it is HEAVEN on earth).

My advice is: if you like a firm mattress, don't buy a pillow top but you WILL notice pressure points at your hips, shoulders etc.

As for whether or not you need a boxspring. A boxspring DOES add some give to the mattress. If you like it firm, just put a sheet of ply or particle board on your bed frame. But dude, putting a mattress alone on the floor is SO lame.....it might be ok when you're in college but invite some lady over and she won't be smiling when she sees you sleeping on the floor lol.

...

The cover on the better set is in perfect condition after 4 yrs and isn't even showing any signs of wear, sagging, or deterioration.
Right on...

Like the commerical, used to wake-up with sore spots but no more after invest in good mattress. Less toss & turns.

Don't be shy about trying it out before buying.

Salespeople @ Sleep country & Bay encourage you to spend time. After a while, my body can feel the difference between good vs. bad support.

P.S. People with bad back should go for harder mattress. Stay away from memory form as it doesn't provide enough support (ie: lead to pinched nerves).

Salelady blushed when I told her to let LF & I roll around the mattress to give it a real workout. LF had on a tight top & miniskirt.;) Mattress shopping can be so much fun!

Just thought I would add that the Sleep Country factory is in Burlington on Fairview Street, just east of Appleby Line. Also, Sleep Factory is having their mis-match sale right now. If you can figure out what you want, and don't care if the colour of the box spring is the same as the mattress you can get a significant discount. happy shopping, sleeping and.... well, you know! *wink

Sleep Country always seems to be running a sale. I did visit them and before buying my mattress, but the sales guy was not very helpful. As I was leaving, he suddenly remembered that there was a mattress returned to the warehouse, that I could buy for $500 less. Now they are having a mis-match sale. Have visions of huge piles of mattresses scattered about the warehouse. They must have morons running inventory if they cant figure out which mattress goes in which bin.

Well Kbear, they DO advertise that often they want to sell enough mattresses to make a pile 1 km high....

As for mismatched sets: labour is THE highest cost to any company so to have x number of people sorting mattresses for a week/month can be costly.

It's an annual sale. Perhaps I am spoiled, but always having lived in good neighbourhoods the locations I have been in are clean and nice. Feedback from family/friends & my own experience with them was terrific. And they let you trade a few times until you find a bed you like. Perhaps like many franchaise operations, the quality of the location has a lot to do with the area, the owner and the clientelle. If I want to buy something nice I won't go to places like Jane & Finch, Keele & Larence, Parliment etc.

I can get you a $2200 sears top of the line king size for $150 including box spring... the last 2, I bought were pillow top... the corner of the plastic wrap was torn... and the mattress was slightly dirty on the corner.. my hand held steam cleaner did it up in 1 min.... anyways .. they get in about 20 kings a month... last week they were out... I currently need one... so Im not going to announce it to all of you where the place is untill I pick mine up... but I would NEVER buy a mattress anywhere else.
